Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Pump For Water Changes

Does anyone here use a pump for water changes?
I am thinking about getting a ~100L water butt to store treated water out the back garden for the water changes every week or two. The butt wont be used for collecting rain water as i dont think the water would be clean enough.
I just got a 450L tank and dont much fancy lugging 20 buckets across the house.
What sort of pump would be suitable for this application? (Links would be awesome!!!)

I tried a couple of cheap pumps that didn't do the job as water have to be lifted to about 2.2 m to the rim of the tank. In the end I bit the bullet and bought a proper pump (Oceanrunner 2500), which made my life a lot easier. No more lifting bottles of water and the likes. Now I just fill a wheelie bin a day in advance and then bring the water to temp with a few kettles, put the pump inside and let it do it's thing. Couldn't be easier :P

It's very practical as well. I can move it close to the tank even when half full and back to the patio with any water left in it. I had it clean and ready to use for a while, but doing experiments with cheap equipment avoided the full use of it. And at €40, it even better value than most of the water butts on sale :woohoo:

Hi m4r10,

I'm in the same sitution as aquaman - have a butt outside for storing treated water, not collecting it, and tired of lugging buckets all over the house. Plus the wife is going to kill me if i spill anymore :)

Do you think an ocean runner 2500 would work in this instance? The butt would prob be aound 10 meters away from the tank.

Thanks for the help,

Alan.

I do my water changes out of 80L Plastic rubbish bins, and use a 20w submersible 1400 L/H pond pump which works a treat. Click Here It lifts the water about 4 foot from bottom of the bin to top of the tank, and id say the flow is powerful enough to go another 2 foot. Got it on fleebay for 17 quid or so.

Thanks for that. Would your bins be far away from the tank?

I normally fill the bins through a hose in the window from outside tap, and do it the night before i do my water change.I position them in front. They can be moved when full but by sliding slowly across the floor, but you wouldn't want to be going to far this way as they are heavy enough. If you have wooden floor you could put the bin on piece of carpet before filling which will make it easy to slide the full bins. They have lids with clasp to cover and close. I put in my water conditioner, and put in a cheap fleebay heater and switch on, then go to bed. When i come home from work the next day i have bins full of warm treated water ready to be pumped into the tank after i siphon old water out the window.

Hi Alan. I'd say my Oceanrunner will easily pump water at 10m distance. As I said, at the moment the water is lifted at about 2.2 m above the ground through a hose of 6-7m (I can't cut it just in case I'll need it like it is in the future). Your best bet is to buy a second-hand pump and if not up to the expectations, you can always sell it again at little loss.

I bought a pump from Lidl or Aldi not sure which 40 Euro, a bit too powerful but no problem with an inline valve to reduce the flow, I use it for re-filling my 350l from some bins I have out the back garden, 20m of 25mm hose and your away, much better than the endless watering can system I used to use

Hi Stephen,
You can fill it with tap water with a hose and declorinateand heat before use.
RO water, is water pasted through a membrane filter, which has a number of filter pods giving hopefully pure water

As for the Ro unit there does be some for sale every now and again up on the forum but also all the sponsors sell the units

But if you are only going to be using a small amount each week then best to get it in the LFS just make sure you ask them to test it with a TDS meter

Also if you are thinking about getting a unit please remember that filters would have to be changed and that adds to keeping it running

A lot off places sell these and price change mad so shop around
