Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

your fish should be ok, did you check your sealing ring in the 305 if they are not replaced properly the filter has a tendancy to leak like a waterfall, check that out and your pipe connections fish should be ok till tomorrow, if you have an airpump put in the fluval media to keep it alive

Hi Gake06,

the nearest place to you where I can say for definite that you will get a new filter is FinsFurand Feathers in Swords. They also have 30% off everything in store this weekend :)
Are you sure you need to replace the filter? Did the leak start after you cleaned the media? if yes, you may just need to give the o-ring seal a good cleaning and ensure there is no grit interfering with the seal. Best way to do this is to give a good wipe down of all surfaces in contact with the seal using a clean paper towel. It may be worth trying to lightly lubricate the o-ring seal too, ideally using silicone grease but at a push, you could use a light film of Vaseline.

Regarding the fish, if you have just done a 50l water change, once you have a reasonable amount of surface agitation for gas exchange you should be ok. Try adding an air stone until you get the new filter. It does depend on the kind of fish you have too of course. If they are huge fish, then it could be a problem.
Is there anything you could do to try to keep the bacteria in your filter alive, or some of them at least? would certainly help in establishing the replacement filter.

Cheers,

Bill.

Although it would be good to know what fish and what sizes of fish are in the tank, the main point is to make sure you do the best in this emergency.

Do not feed the fish at all, and that may even have to extend to a day after getting your new filter.

If the temperature is high (upper 20s), then I'd suggest lowering that.

Another partial water change would be a good idea.

I am assuming that you do not have any emergency equipment at hand (eg an air-pump).

Now, the filter itself: in what way is it leaking beyond repair?
these filters will leak beyond repair if the rubber seals are missing or completely broken, or the canister is cracked.

How badly is it leaking?

Maybe the rubber seal has grit between it and the filter body....if so then take it off and rinse it in luke warm water and run your fingers round the rubber seal. Then clean the recess on the filter housing.

Maybe for future it might be worth investing (or running) a smaller internal filter (either power or air-driven) alongside the main external. For about 20 euro, it does give an added piece of mind.

Also, I would recommend having a box of Ammonia adsorbing zeolite (around a tenner a box) for such emergencies. Fluval and JBL do it.
