Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

can adding too much of it cause a scum / film to form on the inside tank walls ? i have some kind of slime thing forming , its not algae ( at least i think its not ) , there are no fish in the tank . Its been running for two weeks now with just gravel and sandstone rock in it and i have been doing some small water changes every now and again with the right amount of partial conditioner added each time .. so whats the fog about ?

Nearly 100% it's a film of Algae, given it's a new tank, a Bristlenose will sort it.

OK Kev , thanks .. Is it inevitable that algae will grow , even if the tank gets no sunlight at all on it , and is it ok to wipe it off with a cloth? also will a brislenose be happy on its own ?

Unavoidable... I wouldn't advise a Cloth, buy a Green scrubber pad from Lidle or some such, always remember to keep it well away from the Kitchen Sink, in case of Soap etc.

One Bristlenose would be happy to have a Tank all to himself.

The Bristlenose would be grand in there with Tiger Barbs man,and depending on you substrate not being too sharp,i'd add in 3 cory's aswell as you are not overstocked

umm , i think that would be a bit too much ? barbs will get to around 3 inch , not too sure about cats , but im sure they get to somewhere there also ..

Fair play man,but i'd still say you would be grand with that stock.......I stand to be corrected but a Tiger Barb hitting 3 inches i doubt very much, maybe 2 inches over time.....The Bristlenose is a small enough Pleco, and and the Cories wont grow very much, but i'm an understocker meself so if you think its too much, dont do it.....Best of luck!!

This is a new aquarium. and just proliferated protozoa, you have to wait some time, adding chemicals is not needed, the consequences of an immature aquarium, replace daily 10% water

I suggest suckermouth catfish ( Otocinclus affinis ) he eats all the algae, it is good for a small aquarium, live in a herd, for 90l, buy three

Ok,for me it's Oto's all the way...They go to war on algae and 2 of them would clear up a 90L in a day,no sweat.......The only problem you would have then is,they are Herbivores(think i spelled that right) so would need Algae in the tank all the time to survive, but a good second would be to feed them veggies ie.spinach, courgette etc.....You can also buy algae wafers in most pet shops if that would be easier!!

Oh and they are small and stay that way!!!
