Has anyone used or uses Purigen ?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi :
I wanted to know if anyone has experience using Purigen. I read about this product and looks like it is very good for keeping aquarium cleaned. I wanted to know how long it should be changed as it states that is should be changed once it changes to a darker color but if the pouch is in a external filter then it would be tough to see unless filter is opened ... sorry if it is a silly question
Regards,
Santiago

Purigen is amazing! Besides taking nasties out of the water, it also makes it crystal clear. I have personally never heard any bad reviews, and personally I swear by it!
The durability depends on how much work the purigen has to do. It will work at least a month, and up to 3 months. The best way indeed is just checking whenever you do a filter clean and recharging whenever it gets brown.

Thanks Petra :
I was also checking that chlorine is used for recharging what do you do to get the chlorine out ? just use the regular de-chlorinator used to treat tap water ?
The fish shop has only the 100ml packs which should treat up to 200 lts ( I have 180 lts tank ) I will buy one - Do you know a shop that sells it in bigger amounts? as I see it is pretty expensive and it seems better to buy in bigger quantities
Thanks a million

ive started to use it the last 3 wks.i have a 240ltr. tank so i put 2 100ml packs into external so it only cost around €25 in S/H. My water was very cloudy and 24hrs. after putting it in my water was clear and 24hrs. later again it was like bottled water, as for recharging it use bleach the stuff for sterilising baby's bottles is safest its called `Milton`. theirs no need for me to open my filter every month so im going on the basis of if my water is starting to go off i will then open up the filter and check it

AquaPaws can get you 250ml and 1000ml packs as well. Seachem recommends Prime to recharge, but EasyLife works too.

Hi Jeff
Thank you very much I have a 180 lt and I guess it would not hurt to put two in external and see how it goes - My water is cloudy so will try it when I get home and see how it goes
Thank you and Petra for your prompt replies

I have some myself but didn't use it yet as I still wait to clean the filters, which should be in the next 4-6 weeks. I got a 500ml bottle and going to divide in 3 parts, using 2 in the filters and have a spare one when it's time to recharge it. I really hope it lives up to the expectations, as it's pretty expensive.

Hi dear members
I used one bag of Purigen to the 180 lt and water cleared in a couple of hours and even though it is not crystal clear yet I think this product works wonders. The readings for Nitrates is lower than before.
I was going to use two of them in one filter but I decided to use the other in my community tank and will wait to buy a 1000ml of Purigen from Aquapaws.
Thank you all for good information and advice
