Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi Everyone,
I want to by my first ever CO2 kit. All I have is a 96l tank with a few plants, few fish and a lot of light. I want to fight algea and improve my plant life with co2. My question is what should I get, JBL ProFlora bio160 or JBL ProFlora u402? Obviously my concern is the price... Could anyone suggest me which one should I go for, would they both give similar result? it says that the bio160 will last up to 40 days, what would be rough idea of how long would the 500g disposable cylinder last? or maybe there is some cheaper, better alternatives?
Thank you in advance for you answers.

Would last a while in that size off tank mate

if i was you i would go with a DIY C02 setup and so i would get a reg a solenoid and needle value also will need bubble counter CO2 hose and the F/E you can get 2kg and 5kg best to go with a 5 mate

Also to refill it will only be 25euro but dont worry about this as this size would last a very ong time in your tank

you would need a few other bits as in non return vales, diffuser

Have a look at this www.gpodio.com/co2_setup.asp

this would be the best value wise and would last the longest

If you need any info on where to get this give a sponsors a ring i got my setup in AquaWorld

Find out first where you can fill the bottle with CO2 when the gas will be over
I had to go to Dublin

I recommend
www.aquaworld.ie/89,495,co2-professional...out-co2-cylinder-new
or
aquaticgardenshop.com/index.php?route=pr...h=132&product_id=233

Both shops are doing bottle filling

At the beginning will be good and later you will see what more you want

My missus and myself have a JBL Pro-Flora M603 CO2 computerised system in our 500 litre Discuss tank.

We got a bigger 2kg C02 bottle and a full refill for 50 euro form Doyle and Doyle in Balymount.

This 2 kg bottle lasts us around 7.5 months .

The system regulates itself and determines when and how much CO2 to inject into the tank.

Theres also a bubble counter mounted outside the tank on the wall too.

Hope this helps. :)

I've decided to try DIY co2 system first. Set it all up yesterday, got few bubbles comming through the diffuser couple of hours later. In the morning and through out the day bubble counter shows about 1 bubble per sec, but nothing comes out the diffuser... There is a bit of the water trapet at the bottom of the diffuser and it moves with every bubble, but goes back to It's old place by the time next bubble comes... Do I have leak somewhere or what could be the problem?

Don't think a yeast bottle is powerful enough for the diffuser in the pic. Try an airstone instead and place it under the output from the filter, that way the CO2 bubbles will be forced to stay in the water for longer and have a better chance of dissolving. If using an airstone, bear in mind that the CO2 will erode it over time so you'll need to change it after a while.

Also, you can buy a small internal filter and place the tubing under the impeller, which will break the CO2 bubbles into smaller ones.

Thank you m4r10. Would smaller diffuser do in this setup? I just like the glass thing :)
zabol001 it's a glass checkvalve under the bubble counter.

I've heard some squeaky noise last night, turns out my bubble counter had a crack... That's why it wasn't bubbling... its now going through the airstone.
