Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Snails in tank ?

I bought 4 guppies few days ago. Anyway 2 died the first night. One was practically dead coming from shop so I wasn't too surprised. Anyway have since noticed 2 small snails in tank? Where did these come from ? Are they a good or bad addition ? Also have tested water & all is zero. But the fish seem to be at surface of tank the whole time. Am I missing something ?

What kinda filter system are you running and what size of tank?
Snails could be a pest or a good addition depending on what they are! Pics would help greatly to answer

Did you purchase any live plants? Even before buying these fish? Snails can cause issues in tanks as they multiply fast and can damage your plants. Alot of people will add loaches or assassin snails to clear the issue before it gets bad. Also do you have any oxygination in the tank, even down to having your filter slightly out of the water? Alot of companies will have a returns policy, generally 24 hours. I replace all fish, dead or just not healthy as long as the timeframe is kept. Hope this helps.

Is there any colour at all or a dull grey/ brown? And are they glass climbers when the lights are off? The BiOrb tanks generally use air for filtration, if so are the bubbles aggressive or slight? That is quite strange to be honest. Plants are the general cause. unless physically stuck to a fish I am unsure.

If they are the snails I'm thinking of, a piece of carrot will attract them!
They will climb onto the carrot and you'll be able to remove them handy enough!!
Buy yourself a couple of assassin snails to remove the issue permanently!

It sounds like the tank needs some kind of aeration as from what your saying the fish are struggling to breath

How long is the tank setup?

They are pretty transparent looking snails. One tiny and other bit bigger. Can move quite quick on the glass but then disappear & don't see them for hours. Not too worried about them for time being. More interested in keeping my last 3 fish alive ! . Bubbles from the filter/ pump are very vigorous. I was worried initially the flow was too strong for the fish. Tank set up 3 weeks. 1 st fish in it ( second hand tank - dunno if that matters ?). Tested nitrate, nitrite & ammonia this evening & all zero. Thanks for replies

Perfect, you can add a small bit of tubing, like what is going to the bubble maker externally setup, and attach a small airstone in the pipe going through the middle of the tank. It will make smaller bubbles and making it a much more gentle system. It could just be creating too much disturbance to allow the fish to settle properly. As for the snails, try get one assassin snail, they are very cheap and with one you don't have to worry about them breeding (this would just add more issues with a different snail). The ones you have will multiply very very quickly but the assassin will "take them down"

I have a spare air stone so will put it in tomor. I presumed that because there were bubbles the air stone was ok. Bit confused tho about where I add the tubing ???? Another fish dead so something not right .

Where was water test done?
Although I have a pack of API test strips, I wouldn't rely on the answers they give....
They are refered to as reliably unreliable and are no replacement for a proper test.....

From what i read it seems like your tank is not cycled.......Do a good 40% water change and dont feed tomorrow and dont clean out your filter.
Interested in what you used for your tests aswell and i think the snails are the least of your worries right now, even though they are very annoying

How long is the tank up and running now ? guppies need a good air suppy in the tank if they are hovering on the top breathing weird thats your problem. As ger suggested it seems as if your tank is not cycled yet.You need to check to see if you have ammonia or no2 present in your tank.Guppies will die from either fast. Also if te guppies dont look good in your store dont buy them period. The snails will do no harm in the tank as suggested put in a carrot and they will be on it in the morning then just take it out.

Using the API master test kit for freshwater. It's the one with the test tubes and liquid reagents. Everything zero according to that, I tested nitrates, nitrites & ammonia !!
We have v hard water. Could that be a problem ? Will see if oxygen stone needs replacing & see how I go then. Tank up a month now. Fish in it 4 days.

It seems to me that your tank is not cycled at all.If it was you should have a ready for no3 a small amount at least.Being honest if i were you i would go to your local store and ask if they have a tank that is for show and ask them for some gunk / bacteria for your tank. This will give you a pretty much instant cycle.
When you were setting up your tank did you add food in small amount to start the nitrogen cycle off ?
www.wikihow.com/Do-a-Fishless-Cycle
with only 4 fish bacteria from the pet store will give you enough bacteria for your tank just make sure it comes from a tank that is not used for the fsh they sell as they can be more prone to disease.

Bacteria needs food to start the nitrogen cycle i suggest you have a read up about this to get an under standing of it.I dont think your air stone is the problem if there are some bubbles coming from it breaking the surface of the water.
Some pics of tank would be good and more info to help you.
Size ,temperature in tank, filter.

Hmmm ceech you could be right. Got bad advice from fish shop. I used API stress Zyme plus in the tank on days 1,7 and 14. I did add fish food but I'd say not enough. Guy in fish shop told me could add fish within 3 days. I was sceptical so waited 3 wks. In this time all readings I got were zero. I thought maybe with using the stress Zyme I was nt going to get the ammonia spikes you get with they talk about with normal cycling.

Get some gunk it will be quickest way to start the tank off ,just make sure it comes from a show tank.
If you have guk you could add a few guppies straight away.I have also used tetra safe start with good results in the past for starting a tank off fast.It wont give you instant cycle but will get your bacteria started.

Hi guys, an update. All 5 of my guppies died. The water never tested for anything but think tank wasn't properly cycled. Anyway got sponge filter off my parents v well established tank today. Wasn't too sure what to do with it so squeezed the sponge in my tank water dispensing all the crap out of it. Was this the right thing to do. Different types of filters so couldn't put old sponge In with new filter. Should I start testing my water again now & what should I expect ? Thanks for help .
