Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have bought a 4ft clearseal and am in the process of cleaning it , I don't have a filter at the moment but the more I read and talk to people the more confused I get !!! Was initially thinking of an external but the someone told me that an internal (eheim 2012) would be fine. When I looked up about eheims then I saw the biopower range compared to the aquaball or the pick up.
Basically I don't want the filter to restrict the type of fish I wish to keep in my tropical set up ,any help appreciated !!!
Paul

I'm no expert but it makes sense to me. I'm sure a second opinion will be along
Enjoy the new tank

I have an API nexx rated up to 200 liters, and I've an internal that's rated up to 100 liters!
The internal is my fail safe in case the external would fail!
I'd go external all the way to be honest! More filtering power, higher flow rates.........

If you think about it, an internal has less work to do in that it sits within the tank and merely turns over the water, filtering it as it goes. An external is almost inevitably sitting in the floor, sometimes more than three feet below the tank so it has to pump the water back up into the tank. But in practise it doesn't take up a whole lot more energy to do this.
Some people do not like to use an external from the point of neatness (although with modern hoods and stands the in-and out- tubes can be better hidden nowadays.
I would humbly suggest the external to be the more efficient of the two types but it really comes down to personal preferences - perhaps others can add to this discussion?

If you look at the specs of a filter, they often say(for example) 'suitable for 100-250 ltr tank', in that case I would not use it on anything more than about 150ltrs. You can never over filter, but very easily under filter.
always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

Am thinking of an eheim 2215 , seems to get good reviews on the net. Anyone have one ?
You wont go wrong with an Eheim, I'm running a 2217, no problems whatsoever

i have to agree with christyg very good filter the 2217 and if you put the filter media in net bags then cleaning is not a problem and if you get the coupling connections for the pipes then its a doddle.

A really good idea is to double filter your tank...Not only does it give you more filtering capacity but if one breaks down the other will act as a backup and hence you will avoid any disasters if you happened to be away on holidays etc etc..
Always oversize filters too..Ya can never have too much filtration..
I run a Fluval G3 external filter along with the Juwel internal filter that came built into my Juwel Rio 180 tank...The Fluval G3 filter is amazing (was pricey though) It was simple to set up,its simple to maintain and has never given me a single problem in 3 years of service...Its still working like it was brand new...
Alot of people swear by Eheim filters..They are renowned to be the most reliable and easiest to take care of..

I have two FX5's and find them really good and reliable.
