Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

unsure if fish is sick, or didn't acclimate fully

Hi, bought 3 fish yesterday. (african malawi cichlids
one a bit bigger than medium, a medium one, and a small-medium one
they were all in different bags, I had let the bag in the water for about 20 mins, then added some water from the tank, waited another bit, and added some more water & then realsed

From observing the fish in the bags, usually they do be quite hyper in the bags. but this one just seemed to stay still.

Went out, and came home later to the fish on his side in the tank, kinda looked dead
but after I touched the fish he came to life and swam around grand..
came down this morning to find one of my smallest fish dead(could have been attacked by the medium fish)
but the blue lad same again on his side
I am wondering would this be systoms of not be acclimated enough? the other two fish have settled in grand.
I'd like to bring the two them back to the fish shop, but can't get there before they close so it could be saturday by the time I get there..

Sorry to hear of the loss.

From the looks of it, it looks like a stress related death.

But, what caused the stress is a bit of a guess without further info.

Personally, I would initially think the stress of being a new introduction would be the cause.

It could have been chased to exhaustion, but I am not convinced of that from the picture.

i usually spend long acclimatising myself but yestetday i was short for time so i didnt
Spens as long as i usually would. Usually spend about 1.5 hours.
The other fish have settled in ok. Which is making me thinj he may not have been well?
I live less than 10mins from shop.
I am wondering do i ring the fish shop today, let thrm know it wasnt well or do i try turn up with thr fish, or will thry fob
Me off? Got then in seahorse. I am unsure of the systoms of acclimatising ao id like try rule that out.
I took samples of thr water also,

Are you happy that your water is ok ?

So brought the fish back this evening, on closer inspection with an experienced member of staff, it appeared the fish had been attacked.
he had thought it looked like the work of "scaler fish"
which I don't have, I had showed him pics of all the fish.
the fish was under a rock, still barely alive, and I had moved a rock which had hurt it even more

We agreed that he would give me 50% back of what I paid, but was never asked what I paid so I had gotten the value back in other fish. also bought another which I got a fiver off
I was happy enough with the outcome.
I had wanted to return one of the other fish I got yesterday also(pics attached)
I am nearly 100% this is the problem in the tank, as when I added the bag with other small fish the fish(pics) started attacking the bag, on closer inspection to the other fish my tank, it appears they have all been attack, especially the poor parrot fish, who can't defend himself!
so removed all the rocks and done a water change, took me a few hours to get it all back together
I have him netted up and and going to return him tomorrow, its obivous this is an aggressive fish, and even in the netting I have it, it charges at the net at other fish
anyway, tank seems to have a bit more normality in it now :D
