Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Water butt/water change

Hi

So now that the water butt has some water in it, unusually dry couple of weeks since the visit to Aldi :-)

Now I need a new wter change regime so here is what I am thinking please let me know if I am missing stuff or if you have methods that work well for you.

I usually do my water changes on a Saturday evening so here is the new plan

Friday evening fill the 50L bin and add in a small internal filter full of carbon with a venturi fitted for aeration. I picked up a pump in Lidl that connects to a drill for getting the water to the bin, I havn't tried it out yet I'll let you know how it goes.

Saturday morning drop in a heater.

Saturday evening add FFM to bin and do the gravel vac and refill from bin.

and oh yeah there is always a question, how often should I change the carbon? if it was running full time in a tank I would change it every 8 weeks, can I extend this time as it will only be in use 1day a week?

Thanks
Dec

Hi

Well the on drill pump did not work out so good, I think I was too far from the butt and it did not draw water. I may also have damaged the pump having it running dry for too long :( so I used a siphon and buckets

Has anyone else used these pumps before and how did they work out?

First change done using rain water and no sign of distress this morning.

I haven't got my water butt's hooked up yet, just using tap water for the time being.

I've two tanks and do a change on Wednesday and one over the weekend.

After a water change I fill them by hooking a hose up to the tap and then treating with easylife.

The night before a water change I stick in the heaters to make the most of the night time electricity rates.

I don't clean the gravel every water change cos I've gotten a bit lazy. Do it about once a month on each tank. When I want to I use a syphon and bucket. When I'm feeling lazy I just use the syphon and put the hose out the back door. Not enough suction to do this when I'm cleaning the gravel.

To refill the tanks I just stick a eheim 3000 pump into the butt and that's attached to a hose. I have an eheim elbow pipe then attached to the other end of the hose to hook onto the tank - just makes sure the hose doesn't slip out of the tank.

That eheim 3000 pump works great for me Dec.

I think I'll get some kind of water butt pump in time but for the moment buckets will do the job.
