Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hey Folks,

Whats the deal with these ?

www.glofish.com/

Are they dyed or what?

It says "Today’s GloFish fluorescent fish are bred from the offspring of fluorescent fish that were originally developed several years ago. Each new GloFish inherits its unique color directly from its parents, maintains the color throughout its life, and passes the color along to its offspring"

But it looks a bit dodge to me...

Thanks
Vida

You're right - these 'glow' fish were developed originally - I believe through gene mutation.
I think they were actually banned at one point.

Still, a topic to be further discussed?

I think I'm in agreement with experimentation, science needs to figure out how to mess with DNA etc to help combat all sorts of nasty conditions. I don't think I agree with selling day glo orange fish.

Trusting science with our genetic future is another discussion entirely

I thought they were - and am not surprised about the other information.
What a pity they aren't as vigilant over dyed fish!!!

I'm not convinced that experiments with genetic material is a priority way forward as a treatment.

I would prefer to see more effort and money being put into decent sanitary facilities in places in the world where sanitation is serious source of many problems (as it was here in the not too distant past), and in aiding a better way of life.

Personally, I also don't accept the argument for GM crops either...... a better solution for aiding world hunger is to stop overeating in the West, stop dumping and wasting so much food, and minimise the amount of rubbish food grown on fields in 3rd World countries to supply the West with luxury items.

They are my own personal and professional (as a scientist) opinions on direct molecular genetic modifications (of which man-made hybrids and strain-selection are not).

Oh, the fish......not a fan of them either. :)
