Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Why oh why did I use sand

Hi

So after waiting in vain for weeks for LFS to have the gravel I wanted back in stock I got impatient and ordered JBL sansibar white gravel not really paying attention to the grain size I thought it was 1 to 4mm but it is 0.1 to 0.4mm or in other words not gravel sand. So I use it anyway cause I am tired of looking at the empty tank.

So after some googling I see how to look after the sand and keep it clean all very good in theory but in practice not so good I either gravel vac no dirt or a bucket of sand.

Please help! how am I going to keep this stuff clean?

No fish in yet but will hopefully be:

Rummynoses
Cardinals
Angels
Apistos
Ottos
And maybe some snail control

Thx
Dec

I have Argos sand in one tank and I'd say the grain is the same size as yours. I just hoover the siphon low enough for the crap to be sucked in. It's a bit difficult to do that through plants or at the back of the tank as I can't see all the way back there, but if any considerable amount of sand is sucked in, I put it back, so I'm not losing much of it.

You might wanna consider buying some cory as well as they will lift any crap in the water column and hopefully be picked up by the filter.

Cories are pretty good at not letting dirt settle. I have sand and find the dirt mostly settles behind large decor. It's also possible to make a gentle tank cleaner with an air stone, a small bottle and a decent air pump. It won't even siphon out water

Ok lads cories I'll look them up and see how I need to look after them.

@lemonjelly ok you're gonna have to explain the macgyver cleaner or if there is a name for this device and I will look it up. Sounds interesting

There's a guy on YouTube called UaruJoey who does all sorts of DIY stuff. He has instructions for the cleaner. Takes all of 5 minutes to make
