Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,

I'm looking for some of the large branched pieces of wood as per the picture of this tank. Anybody know where I could pick some up preferably somewhere in Dublin? What type of wood is it?

Cheers

PS: This was/is Adrian's tank - hope he doesnt mind me posting a pic of it for reference purposes

beech or oak are best. a lot of the other stuff rots very quickly or releases all kinds of nasties into the water. and be sure they're dry dry dry!

Thanks for the replies. Are there any pet shops where this kind of wood can be bought like Bogwood for example? I would not chance putting in wood that I would pick up in a local park or that.

Thanks

most LFS will have some in stock, though places like Seahorse or Maxi Zoo would have a larger selection

I got my wood free from the bog it was good to get the kids out on a nature walk. You could always get a few nice bits up the mountains the lfc are a bit expensive. I have a nice piece in one of my tanks now a few months and it looks good and I have no hastle. I just maid sure it was very dry and clean before I added it to the tank.

Something fishie going on here

Yeah, bogwood and fallen branches in forests are perfectly fine for aquaria, once care and patience is used

Thanks guys. Is it just a matter of allowing to dry out and then boil several times to clean?

Any pics of the wood you guys have in your tank to give me an idea?

Yeah, if you have somewhere like a greenhouse to put it, all the better. Gets the job done quicker. Currently I don't have any "found" wood in any of my tanks, but I have done in the past. I have a piece I was intending to use but I decided not to because it just didn't fit in. I'll post a photo of it if you're interested. It's pretty dry and needs a bit of cutting/sanding

sorry this took so long. kept forgetting over the weekend. the wheelbarrow in the photos should give you some idea of scale. the top part would probably need to be cut off and it needs the most work. oh, and it's oak. it has a great grain on it

Thanks a million for taking the time to post the pics of the wood. That's exactly what I'm after.

Could I get some of it from you? Happy to give you a few quid if you wanted.

I'm based in North Dublin. Where are you? You can drop me a PM with details if you like.

Thanks again :)
