Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

How much rock is to much?

As above, I'm sitting here looking at my empty tank and thinking I need more rock!

I have about 15 kg of rock and it covers half the back wall of the tank and just about half way up the wall, now I know its very hard to judge with no water or sand but I think I need more to cover the rest of the back wall, would I be mad to cover the whole wall??

As long as there's plenty of swimming room, I don't think there can betoo much rock. Like they say, good fences makes good neighbours. More rock will lead to better division of territory (and more hiding places in the event of cichlid thuggery). Though part of it is down to aesthetics really

I agree with the above and would suggest maybe getting some smaller rocks of various sizes and make some caves and tunnels to give the fish something to swim through if ye get me :)

I would love to have a tank like yours. Here is my latest photo, I am very happy with this setup the rocks go just over half way up and the skull finishes it off. It's a bit like a graveyard with bones and the skull :) it might sound strange but it looks good.

I quite like that tank myself, I think the lighting sets it off too :) .... reminds me of a big tank I seen a good while ago that had a scattered skeleton that I thought looked prity cool the way it was layed out, was hoping at the time the bones weren't genuine

I have 2 young kids one girl age 3 and a boy age 2 they call the big yellow lab "big bad Barry" after a cartoon.
Lucky enough they are not scared of the look or setup.

I seen James's tank the other day and I have to say, the pics do it no justice at all!
A lot more impressive standing in front of it than the pics would lead you to believe!

One very positive aspect of a lot of Rock like yours is the incredible amounts of Bacteria it wil host leading to a healthier Aquarium.

I would imagine the rocks go from top to bottom in the lakes anyway?
and they dont look like a bricklayer put them there either.

yeah, I mean aren't they referred to as reefs? not biologically, but in structure at least
