Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have had loads of different advice re: Water Changes: At present I do a 1/4 water change mid week, and a 1/4 water change and clean up at the weekend - is this too much/too little - just right? I have a Juwel 180 which is semi tropical. Thanks Gary

There should be a routine to water changes, but routine is no use if not keeping a check on the health of the fish to indicate a more urgent water change.

Some species of fish do not take kindly to water changes, but most of them would not be happy in a tank as large as 180 litre either. Some (not all) species of "annual killifish" and some (not all) species of Betta need some thought before giving a water change.

Anyway, in general, you cannot really over-do regular partial water changes so long as the water is conditioned properly first.

The frequency of water changes you quote do not need to be that frequent if the tank is not overstocked or overfed or you don't have heavy feeders, but if you are happy to do that frequency then it can only benefit the fish.

The differences you will find in opinion range from the theoretical "best" to what people have gotten away with if left for weeks and weeks on end.

Personally I perform 10% midweek , 25% weekend with syphon .. So I would say you are pursuing a great regime

I had the same tank for 2 1/2 years keeping discus mainly. Once a week water change of about 30% or so was perfect. Also used polyfilter in the tank as an added extra. I think Ian's point is spot on. Watch your fish as they are the best indicators of how 'clean' or 'good' the water is - if they are thriving, feeding well and good colouration you're fine as they will quickly enough let you know there's a problem. When I'm on Holly's, the tank would be left for 2 weeks without any fresh water being added and all were fine.

My routine now is one 25% water change a week with a good substrate clean (I upgraded to a 385l recently with similar stock levels to 180l). I like the idea the tank volume is fully replaced on a monthly basis by doing 25% a weekx4....

I also test my water once a week when doing maintenance...

In short, I'd say you don't need 2x changes per week but whatever works for yourself...
