Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi lads , so the tank (100L) is up and running a month , and is cycled so at the moment i have 1 pleco (juvenile) , 1 Siamese algae eater a redtail shark (juvenile), and 5 tetra, so did a water test and all is good under the hood :) so from here on i want to fill the tank with different types of tetras , so my question is how many tetras at a time i can but in and what lenght of time can i put them in between each batch as i dont want my Ammonia etc to go through the roof....

I have a different set up than yours I keep Malawi cichlids in a 260L tank but when I finished my cycle I added 3 at first, I waited about 2-3 weeks and tested a good bit during that time then I added 5 more and again I kept an eye on the water and did weekly changes of about 20%, then I just kept adding every few weeks or when I could, I'm up to 30+ Malawis in the tank now and I have not had any major problems, I also upgraded my filter to a large external

Just don't go mental is basically it, keep an eye on the water and do regular changes

Deckey it depends on what size filter you have. I had a 110l grow on tank for young catfish but used a filter rated for 600l tank. Tetras are shoaling fish and trive in large numbers, I suggest you keep minimum 12to 20 of three different types. Cardinals and rummy nose for your planted bottom and my all time favourite congo tetra mid water. They like soft water ph 6 to 7 and temp about 23/24. The bigger your filter the more fish you can keep, the more tetras you keep in a shoal the happier they will be. They love lots of plants to hide in and low lights. Once your filter is running well you can safly add 10 baby tetras at a time every 2 weeks with 25% weekly water changes.

The manufacturers specifications have to be taken with a pinch of salt as they test the filters with no media in it and in real world the output will be less due to media, length of hoses, etc.

As for the shrimps, they won't add too much to the biological load while they'll be around, as the RTS will see them as food.

M4r10 is totally right the stated 600l rating is under test conditions, as your filter gets more and more clogged with fish waste the 600l per hour rapidly drops to a trickle, thats why you need to clean your filter every 6 to 8 weeks. Still your filter will handle alot of fish in your tank once you do 25% weekly water changes. As for finding either of the 2 blue tetra species ive never seen them or looked for them. It may be worth putting a post in the wanted section here. I would not call congo tetra semi aggressive just VERY competitive over food, down right greed little feckers.
