Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Cracked lower corner back glass

Hi lads.
I'm brand new to the forum so hello to everyone. I got my hands on a lovely 150ltr aquarium during the week. It came with a crystal profi external filter and a class rock background made with polystyrene and painted to a lovely finish. I was so looking forward to joining the forum and showing you guys the tank. Unfortunately while cleaning it this morning I somehow managed to crack the lower left corner back wall in behind the polystyrene background. Its just where the edges meet. I'm gutted it happened. What's my options for repairing it. I only paid €50 for tank, filter, heater and lights. The attached pic is the tank upside down.
Thanks in advance for any advise.

You dont have much choice there, the pane of glass need to be replaced :(

Bart who runs rainbow aquatics can do that for you, he is a member of the forum and shouldnt be too expensive.

Dont have his contact number but you can contact him through adverts.ie.
One of the other members might have his phone number though ;)

+1 on that. Whole sheet needs to be replaced. It must be really frustrating that you broke it yourself before you even got to use it. Believe me, every fishkeeper at some point does something like that

Well lads

Frustrating is not the word. There's a local glass repair place here in dundalk, going to give them a shout monday. Just hoping they can save the background and I can stick it back on.

Thanks @anthonyd for letting me know about Bart. If the local place can't sort me I'll get in touch with him.

Such a stupid bloody thing for me to do. I was like a child at christmas when I got it as it was the largest tank I ever had. I have 2 other tanks, a 50ltr Aquel Tropical bowl and a small 23ltr fluval edge. I have 2 parrot fish in the bowl. They were small but have gotten quite big so was delighted to pick up all the gear for a bargain €50.

If a local glasier is going to be fixing it for you, just be careful that the sealant / silicone he uses is aquarium safe!
Last thing younwant is another ossue down the line!

Ok lads I might sound mad but here goes. As i'm broke as a joke I've decided to try the cheap route first.

I spread one layer of evostik waterproof power epoxy over the entire crack and the surrounding area, I let this cure then I applied a second layer. I let this layer cure and then I put loads of this triple layer waterproof duct tape around it, wrapping it around the sides and diagonally across the four corners of the back wall. I then used Tec7 brown colour to reseal and flush the inside side, bottom and top walls of the 3d background.

My thinking is that i can entirely seal the back panel and no water gets in means there's no water pressure on the crack and my patch should work, Total cost €45. If it doesn't work then I've a quote of Bart for €130 and I'll go to him but I think it's worth a try.

What do ya's think?

Hey Dave, did you manage to fix it? I would be very careful with epoxy fix, your 3d background might take some direct pressure of the crack but you still have same pressure on the whole back glass. Once cracked it won't last for long before breaking whole. And trust me its worse when it cracks with fully set up tank, I experienced this myself with leaking sealant. I got it fixed and the guy (apparently experienced) did not degrease the glass properly or something and I had waterfall in my bedroom for second time

Hi Dave. I had similar crack in a 200l tank. I used acetone, nail polish remover, to degreace to glass on the outside and got some 6 mm glass from a glass company and using aquatic silicone patched the crack from the outside. It worked for me. I rebuilt the corner that had the crack like I was making a new tank. Hope this helps you. The aquarium silicone was the most expensive part.
