Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all,

I'm in the process of cycling a tank (almost there, I think?)

I have almost 0 ammonia
0 nitrites
10 Nitrates (I did a water change after the reading).

I've had 3 female platy's and one male.
I think all three are pregnant - one is definitely (she has a pronounced belly)
My tank is 110 litres.

I introduced two more female today and they seem to be making friends.

I have a couple of questions.
I bought a nano tank for fry but it's not yet cycled.
In the meantime, I have some Hornwort coming in the mail.

Would it be too early to introduce the heavily pregnant female in say a week's time?
(after I run the 20ltres' filter in my main tank)

or would it be better to hope for the best with the Hornwort?
Opinions?

Also, I know of only one fish shop in Cork (North Main Street) and would like options.

Anyone know of another shop that has fish?

Cheers,
K

You have 2 shops close to the kinsale road roundabout : Hanleys and petstop.
There is maxizoo in middleton.

In relation to the shops in cork...choice.is incredibly liimited vs the likes of Dublin bit for the bread and butter fish you dont need to go too far afield..feel free to pm me if youd like a stee on what shops id recommend or otherwise! I.personally found maxizoo in Midelton to be quite good but then again I get my fish delivered from Seahorses so that will tell you enough!

Also how long have you been cycling and what method did you use.in terms of the 20 litre...put the 20 litre filter in the main tank now...let it get seeded...when your ready then...use 20 litres of water from the 110 litre tank assuming readings are ok...and you should be ok...the hornwort should not make a difference if the tank is cycled..if its not cycled it will compete for ammonia...Ian might be able to explain the complexities better in terms of the hornworts use in a in-cycle tank better and its effects on ammomia and No2 & No3.
As you are starting out,i would say keep it simple. Also a word of warning...you will be overloaded with fry, your going to need a way to offload them also as they will get too many on a short space of time.
Gavin

Thank you for the invite to message you.
I don't have a car at the moment so I'm limited to a degree.

I have been cycling for almost 4 weeks. 10 days without fish and 18 days with four small platy's.
I did a water change with dechlorinated water almost daily. My filter is powerful (fluvial 4 plus) for a 110 litre but I have sponges and other methods to soften the flow and the platy's seem happy. I have the heater at about 26 degrees.
I haven't had an ammonia spike yet though I did have a small nitrite spike that a water change sorted.
I am having brown algae issues and only since my nitrate levels went from 1 - 10 in a week. Again a water change seems to have helped.

I have the small filter for the 20ltr running at the moment :)

I hear you about fry. I don't have the room for too many and will need to re-home.

at least two platy's are pregnant. I was thinking of returning the male and have all females.
I don't want to get overrun.

Thanks for your advice.

Hi CG,
Sorry about my warped sense of humour but you said,
"I don't have a car at the moment so I'm limited to a degree.
I have been cycling for almost 4 weeks. 10 days without fish and 18 days with four small platy's."
So my question is where are you getting your fish from? I have heard about dedication to the cause, but being on a bike for 10 days without fish, and then cycling 18 days with 4 small platys, how did you keep them alive?! What sort of bike do you have?! Why did it take 10 days to get there and 18 days to get back?!
I understand you don't have a car, so well done in you fish collecting.

Seriously though keep asking questions, and well done on what you got done so far.

lol.
I am a little tired but
I am an expert at multi-tasking.
It is no problem for me to cycle while sleeping and I like platy's for company.
fish love cycling.
It's all about context Jon, context.
At least that's what my poetry guru tells me. :P

well, I was watching the fish tank to see how the new guys were fitting in.
The heavily pregnant platy went into a cave thingy and out shot a fry and he's hiding under some rock.
she's still pregnant and I don't have my nano set up.
I'm expecting hornwort in the mail tomorrow.
I hope it helps. I have some plants (not many) and a few hiding spaces.

any other suggestions meanwhile?

You should concider using Organic Aqua to instantly start your tank. Look up the seahorse website and see what you think. I'm running a 1500l tank on it 4 years now.
