Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

New member and first time poster. I really must say this is a fantastic forum, absolutely full of useful information.
I have a lovely 65 ltr community tank that is going very well for me and I have just bought a new little 30 ltr tank for the sitting room.
I had originally wanted to stock this with a male siamese fighter and maybe a pair of rams, some tetras and a couple of otto's.
OR
Should I consider making a small species tank containing some dwarf cichlids or does anybody have some other suggestions.
I will be buying a large feature tank in the next year, so I just want a nice little project to keep me going.
Lastly, can anyone recommend a decent Aquarium shop in the Mullingar vicinity? There are a few local pet shops, but they don't have a great stock.

Welcome to the forum.

Fish keeping is really addictive ... you are already thinking about your 3rd tank !

30l is quite small and you must be careful in not overstocking it. It might be a little tricky in keeping the water parameters steady (the bigger the tank, the easier it is) and frequent small water changes are probably your best bet.
You probably already know this, but you should 'cycle' this new tank before you start stocking it or use SafeStart by Tetra (there is a lot on this particular subject on this forum - the latest thread : www.irishfishkeepers.com/cms/component/o.../catid,517/id,32367/).
As far as the stock for this tank is concerned, it is all a question of taste. I like the idea of a siamese fighter

I am not familiar with shops around West Meath. Some people on the forum might have a better idea !
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Ooooooh what to but in a 30ltr tank.
I had originally wanted to stock this with a male siamese fighter and maybe a pair of rams, some tetras and a couple of otto's.
A fighter sounds good, but rams can be very delicate. I think the Bolivian ram is a bit hardier than the Blue. Also if you get a fighter be careful with what tetra you use some are fin nippers. Otto's or corys would do.
Should I consider making a small species tank containing some dwarf cichlids or does anybody have some other suggestions.
Maybe some small shell dwellers but your limited to numbers
IMO with your tank a species tank might not work cause they would be all concentrated in the one level at least the other way you can get more fish to fill the surface, middle and bottom of your tank.
Regarding pet shops in Mullingar

I think there's also a Pet Shop in Tullamore but that might be going a bit too far out of your way.

Welcome to the forum.
There is pet shop in Mullingar on the outskirts of the town, in the industrial estate area heading towards Belvedre House. ( I hope that is descriptive enough, I have only ever passed by it )
There is also Animal Planet and The Pet Shop in Tullamore with Animal Planet supposedly being the better of the 2, but I have never been into it, so I couldn't recommend them one way or the other.

Yes it was Mark, almost two years back, are you going to tell me it isn't there now?

Thats what I usually do as well Darragh, pass by it.

@John
No it's still there, I use to buy from there but the guy that use to run it is now in Newbridge and although the guy in there now couldn't be nicer, stock quality isn't great, IMO.

Zale, I know the two shops in Mullingar, one better than the other, but neither too great and prices to make your eyes water. I was in Kilkenny Aquatics the other day and they had a great selection at far better prices and knowledgeable staff.
There is a also a huge new one in Athlone, but also not great IMHO.
I think I'll go with my small community tank, I already have two Rams in my other tank and they are beautiful fish and are really thriving so I must be doing something right so far. Where is the best place to find some nice male Siamese fighters? Any shop I have been in lately havevn't had any, are they seasonal or is there some other reason for it?
Maggie, emmmmhhh, I already bought an ex-shop tank the other day which is sitting empty in the corner and that will be my little project over the next few months, it's basically two x 2 foot tanks so that will put my really big tank on the back burner for a while.

My tank is only set up since Monday and is still only cycling so I'm not thinking of adding any fish for at least a week.
When I filled it on Monday I washed the gravel thoroughly, then added 80% tap water and 20% used water from the tank I already have. I also added some Nutrafin Cycle biological aquarium supplement and a pinch of food to try and aid the build up of beneficial bacteria in the filter.
Today the tank contains a white cloudy haze and I thought this was the ammonia build-up that you're meant to get during the initial cycle so I tested it and the ammonia was zero. What else would this be? I haven't got any other test kits at the moment but I might try to get them at the weekend.

Just bought my first fish today for the tank, a male siamese fighter and I'm going to wait a fortnight before adding any more.
What does anybody think about adding some dwarf cichlids like Kribensis or MacMasters Cichlids? I already have a pair of Rams in my community tank and they are very peaceful but I know cichlids in general have a reputation for being aggressive. I have seen the McMasters and they are especially beautiful but does anyone know what their temperament is like.
