Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Lighting hours?

I have an 85 litre community tank. It situated in a good position, away from direct sunlight (so algae not a problem) but with Baywindows on the otherside of the room there is adequate lighting levels during the day. My question is how often should I put the light in the tank on? I presently have it on a timer and its on from 11am - 1pm and then on from 3pm until 10pm. Ive read somewhere that I shouldnt have the two hours between 1pm to 3pm with the lights off as apparently the fish dont like a break in the day. My LFS said its fine as it is and the 2hour break shouldnt be a problem at all. Can anyone advise me on this. All the fish appear healthy and the aquarium is thriving. I did have slight problem a few weeks back with brown staining however water changes have since improved this. Looking forward to the advise. Also finally I keep my tank at 26o celius. Is that temp good for Neons, cardinals (tetras),bronze cats, mollies and guppys?

What you need to remember is that you are growing Tropical Plants which, in the main, come from - or near to - the Equator. The lighting there is almost constantly 12 hours day, 12 hours night so your lighting should reflect this. However, I remember reading that blanket weed suffered more than did more 'advanced' plants from a 'rest' period
half-way(ish) through the daytime. It seemed to curtail its vigorous growth (and anything which can do that is worth considering!).
I have to say that I have never experimented with lighting along these lines but perhaps inadvertantly your lighting regime is reflecting this experiment...
Finally your temperature will be fine for the fish you mention, although the Catfish could benefit from it being a tiny bit lower - but if they're thriving, then don't worry.

Hi Fishowner,

Did you mention is there plants or not (i might have miss it) if you've no plants then lights not really an issue only used for viewing your fish.

If you do have plants then the times you have it on are fine even the 2hr break will upset algae growth but no harm to your plants.
