Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all,

Recently I bought granulated food for my 6 Danios rerio - just to feed them with something different than the flakes. The food is for any type of Tropical fish (Tropi pet plus granulate). When I asked in the shop, they told me that that would be OK. But it looks like the fish don't like it - I mean they catch the granule and then spit it out as though they couldn't swallow it. I had to clean the tank from food waste several times - then gave up with it.

Could you, please, advise: will it help if I grind the granules?

Also, could you, please, recommend any good food for them other than flakes? I read in some books that the fish menu should consist of different types of food - like flakes, granules, worms, vegetables, etc. The books say that Danios eat everything but looks like not.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you in advance,
Andrei.

try soaking them in a small cup of tank water for a minute or 2 before you put them in...they may be too hard. flake is a good staple diet which you can supplement with frozen food, im not sure which frozen food would be good for danios as i never kept them.
all the best

Hi andrei,i've got ten danios in my tank, both zebra and leopard,i feed them flake, freeze dried brine shrimp from interpet and freeze dried tubifex from the same and they love it,but you've got to break iy up nearly to dust,i didn't realise this when i started feeding it first, they used to do the exact same thing, just spit it and move on to the next bit,but now there isn't a scrap left after two to three minutes

Andrei, the suggestions you've recieved are good ones, sometimes if the granule is too hard fish just cant swallow it so soaking or crushing it up will make it easier to swallow, but on the other hand fish test their food by taking it in the mouth and spitting it out then eating it, partially as a wild inbuilt reaction to A) clean dirt of their food, and B) to see if its safe / tasty enough to eat..i do reccommend varying the diet though with frozen foods, freeze dried foods like daphina, tubifex, krill etc, and also some of the tetramin delica foods, a varied diet i find keeps my fish healthy and active and willing to eat anything...after all you'd grow tried of steak if you had it for every meal every day of the week

Hi Fran, Paul and Seamus,
Thanks a lot!
Ther is not mentioned much about Danios...
Looks like the water came to norm and I am thinking about buying a catfish - well, to help me in cleaning the tank - the species I am thinking about are Corydoras aeneus (bronze cory) - they look like very funny and hardy as well - hope it is not a bad idea.
Thanks again,
Andrei.

Bronze corys are nice peaceful fish you should have no problems with them, the only thing to watch out for is their barbels which can get damaged if your substrate is too sharp watch out for this as it can put them off their food.. as would you with their equivalent to mouth ulcers.. anyway best of luck with them and remember if you need anymore advice we're all here to help

Andkry,
Get at least a few Bronze catfish as they prefer to be kept in shoals. Id go for 3 or 4 minimum if you can,I have 3 of them and they are my favourite fish by far. They are so docile and interesting. Never phased and are very interactive also. Go for it!
People on here probably think Im a Bronze Cory nut as Im always on about them! They are great fish. Defo watch out for their barbels also and finally you make want to get some tablets for them as they cant rely alone on sunken fish food / waste. They are very fond of Algae tablets. (Cheap enough to buy and they last for ages, also the other fish pick them too).

Hi Gavin and Seamus,
Thanks a lot for your messages.
Well, you are saying about the substrate - I have small edged gravel, not sand - do you think it's alright for them. Also, do they eat the plants? I planted two lobelia cardinalis - just to add some flora to the tank (I don't count the algae).
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you in advance,
Andrei.
