Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

JUST A QUICK NOTE 2 SAY HI EVERYONE, I'M NEW TO THIS SITE & FISHKEEPING IN GENERAL.
I OWN A 50L PLANTED AQUARIM THAT INCLUDES:
9 CARDINAL TETRAS,
11 NEON TETRAS,
6 JULI CORY CATS,
1 BRISTLENOSE PLEC,
7 ZEBRA DANIOS & BOGWOOD.

PH IN THE TANK IS 7, HARDNESS 4-5. MY TAPWATER PH=7.8 & HARDNESS=0. CONDITIONS IN THE TANK ARE OK 4 THE FISH AT THE MOMENT. MY QUESTION IS \"WILL TAPWATER EVENTUALLY EFFECT TANK PH & HARDNESS\"?
THANKS

Gabo welcome to the site, I think you may be overstocked for a 50 litre tank. Yes tapwater does effect the fish, more importantly is that you need to get your readings of nitrate and nitrite up here. Also chlorine in tapwater can kill fish, you need to get a water conditioner to dechlorinate it. Can you post some more details perhaps.

Welcome to the forum, there seems to be a double post, please add replies here, so we keep them altogether.

Sorry about about double post , my fault.
I filled my tank early march, conditioned with stress coat, got correct water temp, added safe start bacteria & dropped in a little flake food every 2nd day or so.No starter fish. All the bad stuff peaked & dropped, but ph was unstable, was advised 2 add tufa rock as General Hardness was reading very low & has worked.Gh has been raised & Ph has come down.I started adding fish in May, doing weekly water-changes, & all's well.
Was advised 2 use Easy Balance & reduce water-changes, but nitrate has started to slowly climb. Nitrate;10-15, Ammonia;0, Nitrite;0, Ph;7.0, Gh;7, i dont know Kh, no test kit.
I was told i could safely keep 30-35 small fish in 50L tank?

I still feel its too many fish for that size of a tank, particularly when many of them occupy the same area of the tank ie. Mid region, the Tetras and Danio's tend to occupy this space. The Corys are on the bottom of course. The more fish you have the more effect it places on water health, ie. more waste and hence the filter and you need to work harder to keep the tank clean them. Having said that Im no expert at all, so Id tend to see what Darragh says on the issue. He is very much an expert IMO.

Thanks 4 the advice, i think you could be correct about fish numbers.
