Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hi all

i was set on a 3d background for my juwel 60
but then got to thinking how much space it would take
and how to negotiate the bulky juwel filter

is my too small for a 3d background?

does a print create any sort of depth or
are they just crap looking?

I havent used a 3d background myself but I would think that the 3d would take up a fair bit of tank space. I have a background on a rekord 60 its ok and its definitely better then no background. If you use a bit of vaseline when putting it on you dont get bubbles so it goes on a lot easier and it looks a lot better. Some of the backgrounds are quite good and can be double sided so you get the choice of 2 pictures. I know this probably doesnt help you but maybe some of the other guys might have used them and be able to help more.

I'm with Goldy on this. I use the two sided vinyl backgrounds with vaseline to stick them to the glass. They don't take up any space inside the tank, obviously, and as I use black it shows off the fish and especially the plants really well. I've been tempted by the 3d backgrounds but have never got them for the same reasons. There is a great post on the forums about making your own internal 3D background. It looked pretty amazing, but a lot of work.

hey 4,i'd have to be with the others on this one,i have a 70 and i just think it'd take up way too much room,i've got a couple of stick on backgrounds that i use, some are very good but i normally stick to the plain black or blue, they really show the colours of the fish off

thanks for the feedback all,

i can get digital prints for nowt!
so i will try that road,

i can also use the exact image that takes my fancy too
(as long as i can find it free on the web!)

i am a signmaker and would have no problem

fourmations i made a 3d background for a 60x30x30 which was 25 cm deep ( at the bottom) and 30 on the right hade corner. it left plenty of room for the heater and filter to be positioned in the left hand corner. i had a couple of cory's, 4 neons, 4 Dwarf Rainbowfish.
the worst part was waterchanges as the tank was under my main tank and hard to get to.

try spreding silicone on a sheet of polystyreen( sp) and covering, to a depth of 1cm with sand, stones, etc.

in my next tank im gonna silicone slate in layers and build up a 3d effect that way.

Hi,

What about back to nature \"slimline\". It's only 10mm thick.

I have it on one of my tanks and it looks much better than any print.

How did you know ???

How's the monster tank coming along. Check out this one:

home.online.no/~ksiljan/nyttakvarierom.cfm

Over 11,000 litres!! Unfortunately site is in Norwegian, but there are plenty of photos of the build.

He plans to keep 200 discus in it and about 500 corys!!

Daragh

PS. This post is still on topic, check out the home made background his daughter created.
