Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I recently became the very proud parent of 17 guppy fry. All were doing really well.

They were 2 weeks old on friday and have grown to near double there size.

They are in an issolation tank - but some how 5 of them escaped. I'm not sure how or where but there gone. there is no gaps, holes and the lid is on.

I though maybe they died and the others ate them but 5 in less than a 12 hour period??

Any ideas?

Hi Nemo,
that is strange   ! what filter are you using! if it is a Jewel i would suggest looking in it. regardless i would suggest looking in side your filters for fish or their remains.

I have had many examples of this happen to me.

had you be doing tank maintenance prior to this or power cuts! i had one mishap with maintenance i i placed the filter Flavel 1 in then turned the power on to my dismay i saw fry sushi been expelled in the time it took me to turn and plug it in a fry had swam in to the impeller and became fish food!

It is very important to try and discover were they went if they have all died to create a high risk of ammonia in the tank. this will be more dangerous to fry as they are still only in their early stage of growth! And any damage now will result in shorter life or unhealthy fish

i would suggest one of two course of action to avoid this
1. place the filter in one leg if a pair of women tights i find that new pair that does not suite Catherine, are best for this job.      i would pull this tight then tie off and make a small hole for out let.

2.If you are using a filter with an up lift pipe there are sponges available that can cover this i did see some some time back in our sponsors but have not visited any recently(   :angry:BOLD ME       )

hope this helps and if there is anything else feel free to contact me

Hi Nemo !

My bets are that they have disappeared in the filter! :-)

Happy investigation/fishing them out.

We never found the fry, the filter was clear, so i can only assume they were eaten. But we had 10 news one last Saturday. Is it okay to mix the fry - we have five 6 week old fry and now ten new additions?

Yes it should be fine for a while but the older fry will need to be sexed after 2-3 months (just check this it might be longer)and then seperated to avoid in breeding which leads to bad strains etc.

Silly question but how do you sex them when there so tiny? Do you seperate them into a new tank? I have 15 all from the same mother - so assuming half are girls i will need two tanks?

Sorry for my blondness no this :(

They will show shape after that period of time. The females will tend to be narrower and longer in length as well as less colourful, however main difference is the male will have a gonopodium which will distinguish him from the females.

Hi Nemo,
guppys need to be sexed at four weeks this is the period when the gonopodium develops in the male.

look for the gravid spot on the back of the belly of the female i would suggest removing females rather than males this way if you may miss one female she will have baby's to early but if you put one male in then your trouble start.

i would keep the females separate till about 3 to six months this way the fry from these will be superior and the female will reach maximum life expectancy.
