Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

The plant second from bottom. It will just grow and grow. I have some of it and it doesnt need to attach to anything,it just grows crazy.I just took some out of my tank while ago. Its great though as it twists and turns and goes all different shapes as it grows on.
Great looking tank by the way.

Thanks for all the comments and encouragement :)

Water parameters are fairly important with bee shrimp they will not cope with dirty water but as long as weekly water changes are done and the tank is kept clean they should be fine the crystal red shrimp is actually a breed of bee shrimp ;)

Presume you are only adding some of the fish tomorrow ? Wouldnt it be rather risky to throw the whole lot in at this stage. The tank looks great, love the various plant selections,Id imagine they will establish a pecking order in the tank also!
Any tips for people on what problems you encountered to date? Id imagine you did alot of homework on what you were doing before you did it,it looks great to date. The 20 rummys will look amazing in the tank. I had about 20 of them when I set up my tank initially but alot of them started dying off when my neon tetras encountered problems and it seemed to spread to the rummys.Ive 7 of both left now and they look fab.
Glad you are keeping shrimp also,Im a fan of them myself and always have a few in the tanks, however havent been able to get hold of any bee shrimp from any lfs. By the way the bee shrimp will cross with crystals if you have any. Cant wait for some of the pics from it today. This has been a great thread to date.

Well it’s been a busy 3 weeks but the job is nearly done
I have replaced my 160L tank with a 300L tank and managed to repaint the sitting room, put in new carpet and replace the furniture all in 3 weeks not bad

Got my fish in yesterday all 32 of them (note to anyone just starting keeping fish this is not a good thing to do if your new to the hobby) thanks to sheag35 I got some live media for my 2 external filters as well as feeding them for the past 2 weeks with filter start and flake food .

All the fish are small so im not too worried about possible cycle problems but I will test daily and if necessary do water changes

Unfortunately my Bee Shrimp did not come in but that might not be bad news as it gives me a chance to think about getting more interesting shrimp

@ Fishowner I cant say I encountered any problems I did find that the last owner had cut a support brace from the top of the tank:huh: , so that had to be replaced and due to this brace having been removed there is a 1 to 2mm bow on the front of the tank but im not too concerned about this tanks have bowed worse and held together but I will still monitor it

A big thank you to Seamus (sheag35) and Martin (Duzzy1) for their help ;)
Seamus helped me out with lots of gear and fish selection and martin looked after my 2 beautiful clown loaches that I hope to pick up off you next weekend and bring them to their new home :)

I hope to update this tread every so often with new pics to show plant growth and new fish :cheer: .

Did I hear someone say where the pics are? Here you go :)

A lot happens in 2 weeks!
I got white spot in my tank, this was bad enough but I also got tetra disease I think.
I lost a lot of fish mainly the tetra, I treated the tank and it’s gone I hope.

I heard a lot of good things about UV sterilizers and decided it’s worth a try

Here is the UV unit itself

These are the fittings

The UV goes on the output of your external filter & they are a large piece of kit
I realized this when I went to fit my UV & realized it was 2 inches longer than the space I had, so I had to drain the tank and move it out 2 inches, that took a full day.

Here it is fitted, i still have a lot to do to tidy this setup :(

But sure hey, what else would you be doing?

Another addition to the tank was a brine shrimp Hatcher
These guys went from powder to live food within 20 hrs ;)

Impressive LB,great stuff. I had Ich and tetra disease a few months back in my tank and it killed alot of neons and rummy nose tetras. Thankfully it hasnt returned since but certainly the neon tetra disease is a disease that spreads like wildfire and no known cure.

It’s a pity to loose fish like that but I think my tank is back in order again :)
