Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Im thinking of switching from gravel to sand and was just wandering what kind of sand to use and what effect it will have on my filter. I have a Fluval 1+. Ive read that some people have used childrens play sand what would the difference be in splashing out on proper aquatic sand?

Basically just the price. However the stuff bought in Aquatic shops can be cleaner, and require less cleaning and rinsing to start with.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

As for the filter,it wont affect it as long as the filter is not lying in or too close to the sand, and nothing is stirring the sand up enough to enter the filter. What size tank and how many of what fish in there?Thats quite a small filter.

I went to woodies and bought playsand. Its already sterilised and is washed however you will certainly need to wash it out again when you get it as it will be grainy and there is abit of brown mulp comes off it. Id fill a cup with sand, put it into a dish and get the water into the dish, swirl it another and rinse (dont rinse it down your sink as it may clog it),then another rinse and same one more time, after that you can add it away.
I used the sand in woodies and its perfect for my tank. Also it wont have any effect on your tank. Just make sure the filter intake isnt too close to the substrate.

Acara I have a Jewel 54 litre with a fluval +1 filter in it.

I have the filter suspended at the top of the tank so its nowhere near the bottom.

Would sand require more cleaning and how is it to be done? can a gravel cleaner be used?

I only use a very thin layer of sand, just enough to cover the glass and give the corys something to sift through. It can foul and release gases if too thick.Easiest way to avoid this is to run your fingers through it when you do a clean. You can still use the vac,but it will take up sand,I hover it above the sand stirring up the detritus and minimising sand uptake.
With the thin layer of sand,I mainly use plants on bogwood,eg java fern, java moss, anubias, etc. This helps with cleaning the tank too, simply lift the bogwood up.
