Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi Dolf,

Best of luck tomorrow. The fish will be put into a plastic bag, withwater from the tanks they are in. When you get them home, leave the bag tied and leave it float around in the tank to get the fish used to any temperature difference. What I normally do is take the fish out of the bag with a net, instead of dumping all the shop water into your own tank. Oh yeah, don't forget to get some food for them ;)
What kind of fish are yo thinking of getting?

Eddie

you have to have a net if you keep fish.
also leave the light off for an hour or 2 after you put the fish in,
the best thing to do would be folat the bag for 15 minutes then put in a little tank water and after another 15 minutes, net the fish to the tank, give or take, let us know if you need more info ;)

Most important thing is to decide what fish your getting before you go shopping. Do not buy any other fish, no matter how nice or cheap or value for money they are.

Spend some time in the shop, watch the fish, the staff and other customers (dont be a perv though:blush:

Explain to the staff that these are your first fish, I got great advice from any of the shops in the sponsors section that I visited.

Remember, a pet is for life, choose carefully:)

Oh and enjoy:)

Dolf,

Like the guys already said:

(1) float bag(s) in your tank; take out some water first cause if it's full and you put bag(s) in it will overflow!!

(2) Leave bags floating for 15 mins to equalize temperature

(3) Most Importantly gradually add small cups of your tank water into the bag(s) to get the fish acclimatised to the different water characteristics

(4) Net the fish into your tank. Don't add the bagged water into your tank

When selecting your fish in the shop pay make sure YOU get to choose the exact fish you want; don't just accept any 3 of these and 4 any of those; pick the EXACT ones you want.

Pick fish that are alert, bright, colorful and with erect fins. The difference between similar fish in a batch can be unbelievable. It takes a bit of experience to spot the best fish in a batch but the pointers above should see you right. Might as well pick the best of the bunch...

Good luck & enjoy picking your fish. Fair play; you have done everything right, made sure your tank is cycled & setup correctly for your fish and been very patient.

Well Dolf,
How did you get on? Did you get what you wanted? How have they settled in? And most importantly. how do you feel about finally having fish in your tank?
Eddie
