Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Remember its better to give too little than too much. A small bit regularly is best

Main thing Dolf is not to overfeed them. Mrs Fitz is correct, what the fish eat in a few minutes is enough. I wouldnt feed them more than twice a day personally, fish go for days in the wild without eating so will be used to having small meals. I often skip a day,if you overfeed the fish then it can lead to a few problems. Also as your tank matures more and becomes established then the fish will find bits and pieces to pick off here and there in the tank. My fish regularly nip at the bogwood and plants without actually damaging them. Also try to vary the diet at times, they will get bored of dried food all the time. There are alot of alternatives such as bloodworms, pellets etc... Frozen cubes etcc.

i'd tend to agree with Gavin, in my tanks fish are fed twice a day, unless its my fry tank thats 6 feeds a day, but all tanks are starved for two days each week, allows fish to scavange the tank for food and as Gavin has said fish dont eat every day. it seems to keep them perky and fit, I like Gavin also feed a variety of foods, i generally mix a few brands together (colour food, with flake, spirinula and high protein ) into my own mix and feed that with the occassional treat of blanched veg, tetra delicia and frozen foods, because like us you get tired of steak if you got it twice a day every day for the rest of your life, also live foods like brineshrimp, daphina, grindal worms, microworms and vinegar eels are great as the give fish something to hunt and it really brings out their natural instincts.
Hope i havent bored you too much

Seamus

I would love to get steak twice a day for the rest of my life :)
Two friends of mine got married recently & went on there honeymoon,
They got invited to the captins table and best on the menu was fillet steak so they went with that :P
During the meal the bride turns to the boss :P & says it’s not as good as limerick Bandits Steak :)

When they told me that I was so proud
I Love me steak

Do fish eat steak?

My parents kept tropical freshwater fish when I was young. When my Mum cooked a beef roast, she would give the fish a little bit of the blood that would have resulted from its slicing (French people like their meat very red ! ). The fish used to go mad for it. I don't know if this is very orthodox and/or recommended, but the fish did not seem to complain !

Good advice there. I sometimes blend up the leftover tubs of flake and freeze them. As I only have a 90l tank and about 4 different varieties of dried food the waste on it is quite high (throwing out half used tubs that have been open for more then a month or so). Now I blend it and put it into ice cube trays leaving very little waste.
