Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Lights Died?!?!?! Help!

I just popped out for 30mins, when I came back the lights on my tank were off??

The light is on a timer, on a 4 block extension lead.

The pump and heater are still working
=> power ok on extension lead!

I plugged the lights directly into the extension block, no light
plugged the pump into the timer, pump worked
=> not the timer!

changed the fuse in the plug (had no 3Amp fuse, so popped in a 13Amp fuse)
=> no light, not the fuse?

Any Idea's?

Thanks

found a 3Amps plug in the radio, so popped the fuse from the lights into the radio, radio worked fine
popped the fuse from the radio in the lights , no lights
=> not the fuse!

can both bulbs blow simultaniously? is there a way of telling if they are blown?

:( :( :( :( :( not good
The Jewel light unit is sealed it can be opened and fixed but it means cutting the unit for access, if I remember correctly your tank is nearly new :) take the lights back to the shop for a replacement ;)

Might be worth giving the shop a call first to make sure they have a replacement

You could use a surface skimmer to clear it I use 1 on my tank ;)

Here you go

http://ac4.yt-thm-a01.yimg.com/image/a499c7de50b836c2

They connect to your external filter and take a small amount of the water from the surface the top clear section floats and only allows the top mm of water go to the filter

They have some connections with them to adjust to different size filter hose so that shouldn’t be a problem

I had the same problem with my Juwel Lido 120 when I bought it, lights went after 3 days. Did all the same tests as you Dolf, brought the unit back to the shop and the guy there told me that the new Juwel thin units are crap, he gave me an older version (thicker lights) and they have been working fine since.

Replied by Valerie (Valerie) on topic Re:Lights Died?!?!?! Help!
The thin layer of 'dust' on the water surface can be removed with a paper kitchen towel. By changing the orientation of the filter outlet nozzle towards the surface to disrupt it, it might cure that problem.

Hope this helps.

Have a similar problem with my Vision 180, only thing is when I switch on the lights, both bulbs turn on for about one second then go out again. This happens every time I turn them on. Can this be fixed? If not does anyone know anywhere around Mt. Merrion that would have a replacement before xmas?
Thanks

You could buy a new ballast unit; any fish shop should have them ;)
