Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Please help me, I've been reading all the material of how to start using your tank but unfortunately have gotten conflicting advice.

I bought a new tank about three months ago but unfortunately have gone through 3 goldfish in the meantime. I have no idea what I am doing to them but obviously killing them. Initially I WAS overfeeding, but after killing the first fish only feed them every other day or so. Next time bought two fish to keep each other company, within 10 days both got white spots over their bodies, were very lazy and then died. WHAT did I do that time?????

Lady in pet shop has told me that I do not need to leave tank empty for 6 weeks or so,,,, and she also told me that she cannot test the water without fish being in it?????

Can you guys confirm for me? Tank has been full with water and filter on for past six weeks at least. Measuring 14" width and 8" height (longest side) and 8"x8" sides.

Hi there,
Welcome to the forum.
Firstly, that LFS is giving unusual advise! You can test the water at any stage. The idea is that firstly what type of tank have you got and also you may need to test the water you are adding from. You need to research how a tank cycles. This involves changes in the parameters of the tank water and can effect your fish. Also you will need to add a product to remove chlorine from the water as it is bad / lethal to goldfish. How many litres is your tank?

The LFS saying you dont need to leave tank empty for 6 weeks is correct in that it can cycle quicker, she is incorrect to say she cant test the water without goldfish in it as you can add quickstart cyling products to the water to speed up the cycling of the tank.

Hi Eric,

heres a link to an on line calculator to do the hard work for you working out how many litres your tank holds

animal-world.com/encyclo/information/cal...0Volume%20Calculator

also i'd strongly advise purchasing a master test kit any reputable lfs should test you water for you (with or without fish) but this will save you having to go into them every time you want to test the water, a purchase well worth making. once you get these reading we'll be able to shed more light on what may be causing your problem, also are you using a water conditioner to remove metals chlorine etc from your tap water if not this may well be your problem..

let us know your results we're here to help each other;)

You could use a 1 litre empty milk carton. Fill your tank up with water, then see how many times you fill the milk carton.

Given the water is already in the tank I would avoid the milk carton option!

the tank is only suitable for one goldfish.sterilise the tank with milton or something similar.fill the tank with tap water and aerate for 24 hours to get rid of chlorine.you can then add one goldfish.feed sparingly every day making sure all food is eaten.syphon off 25% water per week and top up with water stored for 24hours.make sure you buy healthy fish!

Buy a water conditioner and you wont need to aerate the water for 24 hours. Also Id personally go with cycling the tank properly as introducing a fish after 24 hours will only result in high Nitrates/Nitrites and ammonia.
