Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just looking for opinions on this...

I have my Main tank and a quarantine tank.

Before I put my quarantine tank into use 2 weeks ago, I had two filters running together in my main tank for a few months so I would have a spare cycled filter whenever I needed one......but that meant twice the electricty.

But I what I need to know is, is it neccessary to have the two filters switched on all the time?

Or is it enough just to have the spare filter in the main tank and have it just sitting there switched off beside my main filter which is circulating water around as normal.

Would good bacteria still grow successfully in the spare filter?

Yeah if you place the spare filter where it is getting a good flow going through it from the active filter it should seed. Personally id leave it plugged in and take advantage of the extra filtration :) Just remember to remove the carbon from the filter before installing it in the hospital tank as the carbon can neutralise some medications.

Thanks...thats grand! I just wondered was it completely out of the question to have it switched off. But as you say, its not using up loads of electricity!

I was just trying to see if I could excercise some conservation habits none the less!

At the moment I'm using the quarantine tank to separate new stock so I can monitor them before adding them to the main tank.

When they are all in, I'll put both filters back in the main tank and leave both filters running though as before...

How long do people on average leave their new stock in quarantine?...I was told approx 2 - 4 weeks.

I would say 2 weeks would cover you off for Quarantine. I know some of the other member here do likewise with plants also.

All my new guys (seven Rummy Nose tetra) are looking really healthy & fat, and are flying around...

I bought a batch of four two weeks ago but within the week three of the four had mysteriously died...no evidence of any illness or disease...water stats were perfect. So I was scratching my head over that.

So, I'd one left over, and he's still going strong, an absolute flyer!..I got 6 others then last week to add to the shoal and they are really good stock. I'd never seen such fat big fellas before!

Anyway, because my quarantine tank was left for a couple of days with only one fish in it, some of the bacteria died off, and the quarantine tank appears to be cycling again now so I'm doing daily water changes.

I'd love to put them into the main tank at this stage though.

What about Ich...would'nt that take about 4 weeks to appear?
