Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

My new fish are a bit pale...

Hi all,

I have some Rummy Noses recently transfered into my main tank.

In the quarantine tank, which had a black plastic bottom, their colours were very vibrant, really red nose and nice black & white tails.

However, since they've been transfered over, they have gone very pale.

My tank has natural sand coloured gravel substrate. Is this causing their colours to fade?

Also, in general, I notice my Cardinals could be a bit more vibrant too...

I've been feeding them Hikari tropical Micro wafers for the past 6 months now. Should I be feeding them something else?

(By the way, before you ask: Ammonia 0ppm, Nitrite 0ppm & Nitrate 5ppm)

all these tetras come from blackwater and look best when kept with black or at least dark substrate and background. when first reading your post i thought u were saying the fish had a black plastic bottom.

Hi Lazerus
they will be a bit off after the transfer ok. it is a little stressing.

but quite rightly as Derek has pointed out to get the best result you have to consider were they came from you will find many post were people have been looking for strata to enhance their stock colour.

but this must be done with caution as some of the products are in fact crushed glass which will harm corys for example.

an alternative would be a product similar to TetraAqua ToruMin Blackwater Extract which will colour the water to a more acceptable level do not to everyones taste.

The Rummys will colour up regardless of substrate,Ive sand and mine like LB are lovely and red nosed. At the risk of repeating,it wont happen overnight,it takes a few weeks for them to fully settle in but they will be nice and rosy. Ironically many people say the red nose's tell the health of th fish,Ive had perfectly red nosed rummy's die on me also in the past!
However you will find that after a week or two the rummys will indeed colour up. How many of them have you in the tank, they are v good shoaling fish, and will colour up better if kept in a sizeable number,ie. more than 7 ideally.

Hi Lazerus
Like yourself i've recently added some rummy nose tetras (about 3 weeks ago) and its only in the last few days that iv'e noticed how vibrant the colours are,I'm feeding them standard flake and since the weekend some live microworm,so yours just need some more time i think

Ps - they are shoaling well too, always flying around the place like a herd of Rudolphs:silly: :silly:

Happy Christmas everyone!!...just popping in because I have a minute.

Ah thats a relief so...I thought they might be starting to get ill or something!

I have 7 Rummy Noses and the two Cardinals that I have are shoaling with them also, so thats good. Making friends!

The Rummy Noses really are excellent shoaling fish, a delight to watch.

I've had to keep the light off in my tank though as the Rummy Noses don't seem to like it. They shy away under the shade...and only come out when the light is off.

I wonder will they ever get used to it? The Cardinals don't seem to mind it at all.

(P.s Derek...actually, my Rummy noses do have black plastic bottoms, but only when they are wearing their faux leather hot pants! ha,ha! )

Hi Lazerus
Re:Rummy noses hiding away,do you have your tank planted..?I have a fair few plants in my tank and I find my rummynoses tend to have their moments when they tend to stay at the back of the tank but most of the time they are right up the front, they seem to love swimming against the current from the filter outflow, also I have cardinals and glowlights but the rummynoses seem to hang out with my glowlights more. Its great to watch them following each other through the plants and bogwood also I had a rummynose around 3 weeks ago who wasn't in the best of condition due to bad handling at netting time (he died afterwards:( ) & It seemed that the others seemed to control their speed to take the sick guy into account. The last of the healthy rummynoses in the shoal would turn back to the weak swimmer and then all the rest would come back and it almost seemed as if they were asking if he was alright:unsure: anyway maybe give your lads time and they will be out more.
Lar
ps- Have a look in the Photos section of the forum,I posted some pics of my tank there a while ago,so you can have an idea of the amount of plants i have used, also it might be an idea to add some floating plants to diffuse the amount of light from above, the fish may feel more secure then.:)
