Fish Tank?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi All first post here I'm trying to get started and don't want to make mistakes but choosing a fish tank isn't as easy a process as i taught it would be.
The pet shops seem to be trying to rob me(2 different shops same tank with no accessories just tank and press €750.00 and €500.00) and the online shops are based in england so shipping is a bomb(still more reasonable).
I have found 1-2 online that seem reasonable the tank is 330 liters which seems reasonabley priced.
I want to have a fish only salt water tank i know there harder to maintain than fresh water i'm not gonna rush into anything.
I have read external filters are better than internal ones but if my tank comes with an internal one and i get a second external one can i use both. I know if i don't use live rock then i need a biological filter.
Basically any info on tanks and what brand, shop or site i should be looking at would be a big help.
Thank you.

If you haven't already kept freshwater fish mate id advise you not to jump straight into marines theres guy on here with 10 years experience that wouldn't dream of it. You really should learn the basics of freshwater first mate, plenty of colourful fish that breed easier and are just as rewarding. Gerry

i agree with gerry
get a bit of experience with freshwater first before going salty
with marines mistakes a very costly
if u think choosing a tank is a difficult process wait till u try keeping marines
loads of fantastic and colourfull freshwater fish out there to keep u happy
best of luck with ure setup

I know That i would be way out of my depth

but i can't really justify spending the amount of money required and not getting what i want out of it. I just wanted places to visit and check out tanks and fish i have already got several books and websites that i'm reading I have no intention of rushing into anything I want to make a success of it.
If I take my time read up and plan it right then hopefully it will work if its something i want then why not try i'm not gonna just throw 20 fish in salty water. I haven't bought anything yet so i can still do a u turn and go for freshwater fish but for now i'm determined to go for what i want.
Thanks for all the reply's i will be checking out all of them it's been a great help thank you

hi mate listen you think your justifying spending money on what ya want.what will ya think when it go s belly up and your money has more or less been flushed down the loo(un less you plan to bury the fish

)i started off on marines 2 years ago had a tank with about 300 euros worth of fish in it to come home one day and every thing was dead and i had them about a year at that stage and thought every thing was running along nice ly. my advice would be get your self a main fresh water tank and if you really have your heart set on marines get your self a little nano tank thats all i have now a 90 litre boyu tank with just 2 clowns in it and 2 hermit crabs.you can pick them up fairly cheap these days.
at the end of the day it becomes nite
