Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Set up in the making.

Looking good this far Turner,
I use expanded polystyrene foam (aeroboard) - the 1" thickness should be fine, even for your tank. I fear the flooring underlay wouldn't be up to the job as it wouldn't be resilient enough with the weight of both the tank and water and would just flatten.
If you get a six-socket board you ought to be able to leave the socket next to the timer empty and still have four more - will that be enough?

Cheers John. Just one thing about the 1 inch aeroboard.Would it flatten down a bit as i only have an 18mm upstand going around the bottom of the tank and would rather the glass just went below that so no sign of the underlay,If you know what i mean

It would flatten marginally, but not as much as 18mm.
You could see if they do 3/4" but even that would be 20mm (ish).
You can definitely get 1/2" (13mm) which should be OK, but it might be worth waiting to see if anyone with personal experience comes along to confirm it.

Thanks Mossy,
That's just the positive confirmation needed here.
There you go Turner, 1/2" will be fine.

I use a Rubber-like type material that came with two of my Tanks and it's only a quarter of an inch, no problems nor major flattening due to the weight per square inch or cm footprint, like a Woman's high heel shoe putting all or most of the weight on a tiny area whereas a flat running shoe spreads out the total weight over a much larger area if that makes sense.

Manado is like styrofoam balls in water, the slightest direct current from the swish of a Fish Tail will send it flying and your plant roots can end up exposed but saying this I like it, however, Dennerle substrate, pretty much identical in colour, is heavier and requires light rinsing, you won't have a problem with it at all. Manado is a B1tch to vacuum while Dennerle behaves like sand and works well in a Vacuum siphon.
