Plants without fish...how do you keep them alive?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

How do I keep plants alive in a new tank that contains no fish as a source of nitrate?
Its possible that no fish will be added for a number of weeks.
Is it as simple as adding aquarium plant fertilizers?
They will be basic hardy plants like Java Moss,Anubias,Bacopa,Wisteria,Cabomba....nothing fancy!

Tap water (conditioned, keep the good bacteria in the tank alive) should be ok for a while. Throw some water from another tank in if you are worried (or add a little normal plant/lawn food/fertilizer (20:2:2 is good in tiny quantities. So is an egg-cup or so of pee!). If doing a fishless cycle, the ammonia source will be enough for them.
You need a LOT of plants to deplete a tank of enough nutrients in a few weeks to kill them;) .

I have said this before, where Plants are concerned use proprietory Liquid Fertilisers, they are formulated for this purpose so stick with that that works, old Wives remedies and solutions were brilliant in their Day when science wasn't interested in your few little Guppies or Neons that were in the little 12 x 12 inch plastic crappy Tank but now even the cheapest of concoctions will keep the most basic of Plants alive.
But, aren't you worrying unnecessarily? as suggested, normal Tapwater will have some nutrients contained in it and the Plants themselves will have reserves of same contained within themselves and as stated, will take a while to deplete as they won't be growing quickly yet.
You should concentrate more on the process of cycling, this is a process that I would give more importance to.
Kev.

Cycling the tank is not going to be an issue....I have a filter running on another tank that Im just gonna switch over when the time comes to add fish to the new tank.....
The problem I have is making sure the plants dont start to die off and foul the tank water while I wait on the fish I order to arrive. This could take a couple of weeks.

Ah well that's easy, Feropol liquid Fertiliser or any other liquid Fert will do the job and will not adversely affect your Water.
Keep away from fert sticks and tabs because there isn't a whole lot of microbial activity to utilise them etc.

is it ok adding fertilisers to water for live plants if external filter is running on carbon? is carbon not going to just clean it up?
