Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Folks,
Recently a friend of mine (who owed me a favor) ordered me plants over the internet. He ordered 200 plants (each stem counted as one) from the UK. They cost approx 30 Pounds including shipping. I got loads of plants to fill mu Vision 450 tank. I thought this was exceptional value. In general all the plants were in great condition. I had a few arrive in poor condition and I didn't bother to return them as I felt I got really good value for what my mate paid for them.

I would advise you take a look if you are interested in planting your tank

They have a great service alright. I ordered one of their biotope packages and it arrived in three days with all plants in perfect nick. Reckon it's a good way to start a planted tank and then supplement them with plants from your LFS.

Not 'having a go' here, but I do worry that if everyone starts buying all and sundry online and LFSs start closing down through lack of sales where we will go in the months and years ahead.
I honestly believe we owe it to our Sponsors who have stood by us in the better times to do our best to keep them going until those days return.

I would be with JohnH on this.
Now, I don't buy off the internet, but if I did then it would only be stuff that would never be stocked by the LFS.
I need the LFSs to stay in business so that I can continue to keep fish (and to chat with people rather than agonise over filling out paypal forms :) ).

I used to buy things mail-order in the early days of keeping......LFS were limited then.

But, there are many plants that I have never seen here for sale.....so there is still a good opening for ordering from overseas.

Guys,
I agree we need to support our local fish shops but with a 3 to 4 times the cost of online for the volume of plants I got for the tank it is a significant saving in the cost of getting a large tank up and running. As for owing it to the sponsors i agree but there would be no forum without the members and I believe we also have a responsibility to highlight items like this when they come to light. Remember it is a hobby and in the current financial climate savings like these must not be ignored.
