Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

possible solution to algea was created by alf (alf)
Lads I have a 500 ltr. heavily planted tank and I was starting to have trougle with
a LOT of black beard algea and the long green hair algea,it was everywhere.
So I started asking around for possible solutions to this problem
and I got talking to a polish chap who seemed to know his stuff
he has a few planted tanks himself anyway he was telling me to try a
product called Steranios 2% and use about 12mm for every 100 ltr. every day.
Now this is not an aquarium product it's a seriliser/detergent for hospital use I think.
I know of one guy who has been using it for about 3 weeks now and he said it got
rid of all his algea.

So I started using it about two weeks ago myself and I have been on holidays for most of that time
and left my mate looking after the tank while I was gone.
I came home yesterday and there is a massive improvement in the tank
most of the algea is gone and some of my plants have grown and spread like crazy
and all fish are fine.

At the min I use ferropol daily and weekly also easy life potassium ,flourish iron
and 2 weeks ago I got my hands on a CO2 system with a Dennerle PH and CO2 control unit.
(I always had co2 system I just got a better one )

I have discus ,galaxy rasbora,snowball plecs,bamboo shrimp,cherry shrimp
assassin snails,trumpet snails,amano shrimp,

levels in my tank are , NITRITE 0,NITRATE 0, AMMONIA 0 PH is set at 6.5
I do two small water changes a week, lights are on for 10 hours

I'll post some pics later if I get a chance.
Just thought I'd share this hope it helps.

Cheers
Al

Can I ask for some a chemist for comment on this product, please:
STERANIOS 2%

cheers
chris

STERANIOS 2% is a solution of 2%
(expressed as 100% active ingredient), buffered to pH 6
in the presence of a catalyst surface effects.
STERANIOS NG and 2% 2% ECS contain STERANIOS
Two compounds in combination, limit the evaporation

Dangerous. Observe the precautions
(established according to Directive 99/45/EC and its adaptations).
Storage: 5 ° C to +35 ° C

MSDS: glutaraldehyde glutaraldehyde

Now remember the active ingredient is at 2% in the solution which is further diluted in the tank, It is a steralisation agent used in the medical industry, there are other ingredients of which are not listed like the buffering agent.

More background on the active ingredient

Hope this helps.
