Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Upgrading the bulbs?

Hi everyone,

So I've just set up an Interpet Fishpod 120 and I'm trying to have it planted. I have a layer of organic compost covered by a layer of fine gravel. At the moment I only have 6 glowlight tetras, but hoping to add more fish slowly over the next few months. These are my plants:
- hygrogphilia polysperma
- egeria densa (elodea)
- Ceratopteris thalictroides (water sprite)
- 3 types of green cryptocoryne (large, medium, small)
- and some dwarf hairgrass i was hoping will carpet

The problem is that right now I have two 15W daylight bulbs that came with the tank. Now I've found some similar bulbs online, same size, roughly same Kelvin colour (6400k) and I'm thinking of getting them. If you copy and paste this URL you can see the one I'm looking at. www.bltdirect.com/product.php?pid=5559
And this is the original interpet bulb: www.rockbottomaquatics.co.uk/interpet-replacement-15w-lamp.html

My question is this:
Will the aquarium hood light fixtures limit the output of the bulbs to 15W each or will I be able to get the full 30W out of each one.

Thanks

Can I use a bulb with a higher wattage rating in my Starter Unit?
No. You must only use a bulb where the wattage has the same or a lower rating than that of the Starter Unit.

Got this on the official INTERPET website........The starter unit wont handle it!!

I'd bought and mounted the 30W, you have no restrictions on the power of ballast, and plastic hood will not melt, so there is a lot to think about! buy, mount, enjoy the carpet in the tank :)

This was on a similar interpet fishpod? How long have you had the 30W bulbs in? If that is the case then maybe Interpet say not to use higher Watt bulbs 1) so they can sell their own bulbs and 2) just in case something does go wrong they're not held accountable?
I might take a chance on it and hope for the best.....?
