Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Some of the Monado has gotten dropped onto some plants by the Bala Sharks but I cant see that causing the white leaves.
All advise welcome.
Many thanks.

Hi,

Could you give some info on lighting (wattage, lighting period), kind of plants. Is it only pogostemon helferi suffering or all plants?

pH for planted tank is slightly too high in my opinion but it shouldn't be the reason.

I would look for the reason with insufficient lighting on the information given.

You maybe overdosing Ferropol - I don't remember how it should be dosed. It contains iron. If your plants stopped growing up too- it can be a reason.

Any other damages on plants?

Hi Katherine,

Lights are twin T5 Tubes 54w each, lights on for 9 hrs per day.

The plant you mention, (not even gonna try) is the only type that is showing any problem, if it is a problem.
By the way the plants are only in about 3 weeks.

So you don't even have 0.5 Wat per 1 liter of water. Lighting period is too short. I would keep it longer - you should gradually increase it by an hour a week up to 11 hours. Consider adding an additional bulb.

Pogostemon helferi is a beuatiful plant, it is described as an easy one but not allways want to grow in every tank by unknown reasons...

Are you going into planted tank or just you would like to have some plants in your tank?

According to the instructions on the Ferrepol 24 it should be 1 drop per 50L I am adding only 4 drops as I have never used fertilisers before and didnt waant to overdose. 260L tank plus 2 externals.

Ok Thanks I will increase lighting times and look into adding another tube or two.

Just looking for a nice looking tank not over planted, if you know what I mean.

So, don't spend money on additional lighting - just brows for low-requirement, easy plants that don't need anything special. :)

Now that I know the plant name, I googled the problem and it seems common on this plant due to lack of what people are calling "trace nutrients".

www.google.ie/search?q=pogostemon+helfer...874&biw=1280&bih=783

Should I up my dose of Ferropol24 to 5 or 6 drops per day?

Thanks again.

There are a number of reasons for this.
Even if the reason is lack of nutrients, then that may not necessarily be due to not having enough micronutrients in the water but may also be due to something 'locking' the ability of the plant to uptake those nutrients.

pH and carbonates can act to prevent uptake of iron in plants. Some plants are more susceptible than others to
this effect.

Dead or ineffective roots will also cause this.

If you had a whitening of the old leaves then I would be overly worried unless the effect started to affect new leaves....but this is new leaves gone white.
