Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hope its OK to start a new thread on this. Other hobby forums im on go nuts when anyone starts a thread that is remotely related to anything previously even whispered about! :hammer:

Researching co2 regluators, and would like to get any opinions on this one to get the topic started.

Also would one still need a timer to turn the solenoid on and off?

That should do the job rightly! I have 2 chinese made regs, both running for over 2 years now, with no issues. You will need a timer socket, I use the Ikea ones as they are cheap, and quite narrow, as I found lots of timers are quite wide, so take up more than one socket on a 4 or 6 gang socket strip. I take it you are going to use c02 fire extinguisher with this reg? You need to set your timer to come on approx 1 hr before lights on, and go off 1hr before lights off.

Thanks Omen, Good to know the Chinese gear is OK, and for clearing up my query on the timer. Yes i will be using a fire extinguisher. I think i have everything i need to go live with the co2 system, i will be putting up a separate thread on the project. (once i have a tank!)

Just to add information to the thread, the solenoid on this reg is removable, in case it fails and needs replacement, and there is no problem with running on Irish Voltage (220 - 240)

I use the manual timers, their default/unpowered setting to a solenoid is off. So if you have a power outtage the c02 will not come on at all. Ahh, I see what you mean Draco, the manual timer will pick up from were it last left off time wise... But tbh so will your lights and all, so should really make little odds if using all manual timers.

With regards to the voltage, the nice people from China normally send an adaptor for 3 prong plugs, so good to go. You can in fact cut the Chinese plug off and wire it into a 3 prong plug directly if you wish, however there is no earth on the cable. I've done this with one of my regs to no ill effect.

About the timer used, I had all digital ones, but when the power went for a prolonged period, the battery from the timer gets run down by the whatever appliance is plugged in it. So when the power comes back, the timer will get reset on the off position and the appliance won't start. On the other hand if using a manual timer, all that will happen is inducing a delay in the program and if you use only manual timers, the delay will be on all your appliances.

Why not just deal with Daniel (aquaticgardenshop.com) looking at the price of shipping from china you'd probably get everything at approx the same cost from him, plus if theres any problems it would be easier to sort out with someone based here, lets keep it local if we can and spend our money with our local fish shops and sponsers
