Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Trying planted tank for first time

Ok guys I have a 110l tank in the shed looking for a use and I`ve decided to try my hand at a planted tank. Now I have never tried any live plants in any tank I`ve ever had but I should be going away to work again for a few weeks and I am thinking of getting this tank up and going before I leave and see how it has grown when I come back before putting any fish in. So today I bought some TatraPlant Complete Substrate and I have an idea of this with a covering of gravel maybe on one side of the tank and just sand on the other side or maybe from front to back not sure yet. Anyway have been doing some reading up on the forum and I would be happy for any advice, comments or ideas of plants and fish, I fancy a kinda grass effect with lots of Neon Tetras but any other ideas or pics of your tanks would be great.

Thanks as always

Chris

Started this morning with the substrate and gravel, used a piece of timber to make a break between the sub/gravel at the back and the sand at the front

Added the sand to the front

Added water which I had ready in a bin for a few days, with heater and filter

Filled up and now all I need are some plants, also I need do some homework on the lighting, I have taken out the basic 2ft tube and want to make a new cover with some GU10 LED lights

I did my first planted started in feb this year. For best plants and equipment and foremost advice check out some of the sponsors on here. I got all my gear thru the forum. I also found the tropica website useful, make a shortlist of the plants u like and depending on how high tech u go, work from the easy, moderate or demanding plant groups. Get some fast growing plants and plant as heavy as u can afford to establish the tank and out compete start up algae. Lastly get a bottle of easy life profito. All this info I got from others on here when I was researching and it all paid off!

Not sure yet about the co2, 10 years since I got my first tank and as I say I`ve never tried a planted tank before so not sure if I want to start laying out money on things I dont fully understand, need to start off easy, which is why I post here, great info and people willing to give their experience to help the newcomer and great that it`s in Ireland, I am on some other forums but they are all from other climates and the info you get might not suit our area, but welcome all the same.Apart from the co2 I am looking at the lighting, should I have left the 2ft lamp in the tank ?? The GU10 LEDs are a lot brighter and I`m not sure if this will help the plants even though to me they give a much nicer light to the tank ( sorry none of the pics show the lights but it`s only a temp system at the moment and being an eletrician myself it`s not a sysytem I would recomend  )
So I have two types of lights at the moment, both GU10 LED`s 220V (I would rather 12V being above water) one is 3000K and the other is 6000K, so is there a better one for plants ?

Mods... sorry if this is in the wrong place and feel free to place where it belongs, I know it started with plants, went to a new tank, then went to lighting........ sorry... but too many questions and even more answers..

as always

Thanks

Chris
