Planting a 180 litre tank.
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi guys,
I have decided to replant my 180 litre aquarium again and get rid of the plastic plants that are currently in it.
Currently I have the following plants in the tank mixed with plastic ones:
- Lysimachia nummularia (Aurea)
- Anubias nana
- Anubias barteri
- Echinodorus bleheri (Amazon Sword)
I have also just ordered the following plants:
- hygrophila polysperma
- ludwigia repens (red ludwigia)
- Hygrophila difformis (Water Wisteria)
- Fontinalis antipyretica (Willow moss)
- nymphea lotus RED (Tiger Lotus)
- Cabomba caroliniana (Green Cabomba)
What do you guys think of that plant selection?? I believe I have enough but if you think I should get more or maybe one of these plants would not be suitable please let me know. Any comments/ recommendations encouraged!!

No no co2 or fertilisers, I plan on redoing the tank using the Walstad method which will not require that.
as for lighting I have only 60 watts of lighting but that can easily be remedied with new bulbs if needs be.

I completely redid my tank yesterday using the walstad method and took out all plastic plants. I am very happy with the results and cannot wait for it to get established! I'll post some pictures later!
I made a couple of changes to walsted, I still have my filter running (I just don't trust it without it, at least until it is established) but she does recomment a powerhead with mechanical filtration these days anyway, I put a netting between to soil and the stones, This way the plants can still get through but if I ever have to tear up the tank then the gravel will come up easily.
Just to let people know I bought all my plants off of ebay from france, they arrived within 3 days in great condition imo with some extra plants. Plants are usuall €2 per plants which is 6-7 cuttings but you usually get more and postage is €3.50 but €1 for each additional item so for a bulk buy it works out every cheap. I am not sure If I can post the name of where I got them on this site with the partners here and all but will if I am allowed.

Here are the photos of my 180 litre rio which I planted yesterday using the walstad method:
Soil and gravel (soil it actually thicker, I just have it shallower around the very edge):
The whole tank (doesn't look like much until it matures a bit):

Update after 5 days:
all plants seems to be growing very well with an inch+ of growth in some, I even have some shoots of ludwigia repens coming up from the substrate!
For some reason my Hygrophila polysperma is not doing as well as the other plants on the willow moss I attached to the ornament does not seem to be doing well in comparison to the moss growing on the gravel. There also seems to be something eating my Amazon sword but I have not seen any fish picking at it so I am not sure what is happening there.
Overall I am happy with how my Walstad tank is going and will keep you updated
