Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I've just made my first Co2 reactor and I plan on fueling it up and attaching it to my biggest tank tomorrow. I'm just wondering... my tank is a Juwel Vision 180 and there's an attachment on the powerhead for an airline to be connected to it. If I connect my reactor to that, will it be enough to diffuse the CO2 into the tank?

Hi you may have trouble with the seal on the milk bottle,
If you have a barrel or some sort of vessel to submerse the whole system under water,
And blow in to it trough the outlet pipe and check for leaks,or weak seals just to be sure,
Also try and use fizzy drink bottles that are designed to hold pressure!

Good luck with your system anyway.

Thanks. I'll give that a try. This isn't ultimately what I'll be using. Just wanted to muck around with this first and see if it works

I have the same tank and pump. I have the CO2 going in via a diffuser from two 2 ltr coke bottles connected in-line. The air hoses are attached to the caps via a fuel line attachment sourced on a model aircraft hobby site. I drilled a hole through the cap and the fuel line attachment goes through the cap and is screwed in place with the nut. There is also a one way valve. The next thing to decide on is the ratio of ingredients sugar, yeast and baking soda. One that works well for me is 1.5 ltr warm water, 1 spoonful yeast and 1 spoonful baking soda. For me this generates over a bubble a second for 7 to 8 days. I did have an overflow bottle but swapped this for the second coke bottle. Your going to have to way this up yourself.
For those with an external filter check the link at the end out. Its the best DIY CO2 system I have seen on YouTube. If I ever get an external filter this will be a must for me. The tank is running about six weeks and is doing fine so far.

Interesting clip. looks ALOT less DIY than some of the other systems I've seen on youtube. I made up my mix last night, connected it up and went out for a few hours and woo-hoo, it worked. I'm definitely going to source some better materials and make a slicker, more efficent looking system

Just a question... What kind of changes should I see with a CO2 connected? And how soon should it be before I see some difference in my plants?

If I were you, I'd get rid of that milk bottle as they're not designed to be exposed to any pressure and change it with a fizzy drink bottle.
