Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have no experience with plants and have just ordered Moss balls and Java Moss (I have done a bit of research on them!!). Do I just put them straight into the tank and do I need fertiliser? Will they block out the light in the tank?

Sorry to crash your post - hope you dont mind!

With the Moss balls just drop them into the tank they will sink to the bottom, the java moss you need to tie to something like bog wood. imo no need for fertiliser

nonie, get some fishing line and tie the java moss down. I got some recently, its too early to tell how its doing, but it seems fine.Im trying to a cave feature with it but it will take about 4 or 5 months for it to get to my liking. its best not to leave it floating however as it can get into the filter and flourish there too!
As for the Java Ball, plop it into the tank and its fine! Also if you have shrimp they will love it for some reason.

I would personally reccomend sowing thread, as this decays the moss will attach itself to the bogwood,
Also for the moss ball do turn it every week otherwise it might go a bit brown or out of shape, just my 2 cent:woohoo:

Arabu I'll send you a pm

I wouldnt use sowing thread, alot of them have dye in them that are harmful to the fish. Also fishing line is transparent, when the moss grows to the bogwood or wherever, you simply snip the fishing line and it comes away.

I never took off the fishing line and its grand
the moss will stay on better if the line is left on and as Fishowner said its transparent;)

Cheers guys for your help. I m off to collect Java moss and the Moss Balls tomorrow so I will keep you posted with pics as to how i get on. I have a stone cave in the tank but I think I might attach the jm to it. What do you think.

Looking forward to getting rid of the plastic plants. Have one in particular I cannot stand!!

You might wanna keep that plastic plant in the drawer for when you need to use a quarantine tank, sometimes fish that are sick perfer to hide near plants etc..and with a quarantine tank its something that people wont always have.
For example I dont use any substrate in a quarantine tank.

Good idea fish owner. the tank I have is only 90l and my quarentine tank is 20l so unfortunately the plant in question wont fit. But I will take great delight in dumping it into the bin as I hate looking at it in the tank. I already have smaller ones in the quarentine tank which I keep set up behind the couch. When I need it i just add Organic Aqua!!

I know this thread is a bit old and I never pursued the quest of floating plants but I plan to definately do it now 'cause my gourami is hiding on the bottom now.

So Here I go again, floating plants, anyone seen anywhere or want to sell some of them??
thanks
