Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

can anyone recommend a good liquid fertiliser..? the tank is fairly heavily planted - No under gravel planting substrate or CO2,using tablet fertilser in the gravel I have been using "INTERPET - Flora Boost" up to now (only one the LFS had in stock) and it's just run out so I was wondering what others were using and what they thought of it...?
Cheers...Lar

If your not getting any algae problems just continue what your doing is the best way really.
Most of the plant fertilisers you buy in the lfs only contain trace minerals, they dont contain nitrate phosphate or potassium, hopefully your fish load and fish food are providing these in a low light tank.
Most of the trace fertilisers are very similar ,so I wouldnt worry about which brand tbh once its somewhat reputable.

Thanks for the info ,looking at it from a purely financial viewpoint, buying 500ml of Tropica plant nutrition, would work out at half of what i wold pay for 500ml of my current product in my LFS,so i think i'll get some and give it a go.
Thanks again

have you looked into EI dosing
www.ukaps.org/EI.htm
it is highly regarded for its success
and is used by many expert aquascapers
you buy dry ferts and make your own mix or dose dry
it will save you an absolute fortune and takes
out the guesswork and need for test kits
when you buy branded plant ferts
they are basically the dry ferts mixed with
over 95% water and then they charge you a bunch,
making up your own is a doddle

I have been looking at EI for the past year but it would mean I would be changing 150L of water a week and that’s a lot of work

Do you use it yourself?

yes, i went off and got the dry ferts in the uk
and have started using it,
after several hiccups, my tank is only getting going again
so i cant comment on growth much yet,
i really like the lack of testing involved,
thats one less chemistry lesson i can forget about having to learn!
my tank is only a 100l so its not as tricky to do the 50% w/c

Then I would only have to do a 25% water change as usual
It would be better than nothing?

I just done a google on it and found a few net based suppliers, tho I'm sure any of the forum sponsors who deal in Tropica plants could help as well, bear in mind when ordering from the net that shipping costs can be expensive, saying that I may be heading over to germany in a while so I may just use my current fertiliser till then

4 I was thinking
if I did a half dose of EI
Then I would only have to do a 25% water change as usual
It would be better than nothing?
LB
hi LB, not sure if that would work
its about having the estimated maximum fert level
and then knocking it back with the w/c
so you dont risk overdosing (whatever that might do)
im sure zig knows more than me on this,
he may help or ask on ukaps

Lar have you thought about EI dosing yourself?
LB
the only thing i regularly dose myself with starts with B and ends in EER ...

I'm not sure about EI at the moment like yourself i'd be put off by the big waterchanges every week, tho to be honest where my tank is situated my syphon tube goes out a window and down an outside drain..
