Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Got 2 Juwel 70's planted up at the moment. The substrate is pea gravel, with some Sera Floredepot Substrate underneath. I recently got a Rio 300 and think the pea gravel is way to bright with T5 lighting.

Was thinking of buying some fine black glass gravel, and got two small 3kg bags to put in a small tank to check it out. I think it looks really good in a planted tank. Though I have some questions.

Has anyone used this kind of substrate on a large tank?

Is it OK to use with Corys and Plecos? It does feel smooth to touch.

Does it compact like some sands?

Also in a planted ( heavily planted) tank, do I need to suction the gravel as often and as vigorously as I've seen vidoes on YouTube?

Could I put a thin layer of peat moss on the bottom of the tank to replace the Sera Floredepot Substrate? I noticed in one of Zigs posts he mentioned using only peat moss and horticultural grit on top?

Still looking for help on this one, heres some photos to help, the dark tank is just a test set up for the photo, plants are cuttings from the other tank.

I have this in a low light tank. Although you cant see it with the grass plants covering it.
I wouldn't use it with cory's. I think it would be to sharp for their barbels.
It dosent compact like sand but because of the size of it, it is a bit of a dirt magnet. Within 12 months you will hardly see the substrate with the mulm (i dont gravel vac in this tank).
Yes you can use a sprinkling of peat moss on the base of the tank before the substrate is put in to the tank.

Instead of the crushed glass you could use black Roman gravel. But this is a slightly larger grain and you may find it hard to hold down really small plants like HC Cuba.
