Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Glosso & liquid carbon

will Glosso grow with liquid carbon instead of injected Co2?
If it will grow is 4 watts per gallon to much light or would it be better with 2 watts per gallon or less?

It will grow with liquid carbon alright but anymore than 2WPG is probably your threshold if your not using a regular CO2 method.

Its a catch 22, the glosso will grow just fine with the liquid carbon but it may grow upright/tall rather than spread because you may need more than 2WPG to keep it low and spreading. The more light the lower/compact it will grow. To use more than 2WPG you would probably need to use a regular CO2 method.

Give it a go though, if it grows tall just cut it back near to its roots and second time round it may grow more compact, no need to replant a second time just trim it back like the hairgrass and it will regrow. Should take about 3 weeks to carpet an average sized tank, grows quickly.

Might get some off you if you get it going well;)

Cheers zig.
I had it growing with Co2 but i had to remove it. I was trimming it every 3-4 days or it was trying to take over everything. I have replaced it with HC Cuba.

I will plant a 60L with it this evening and see how it goes.
If i use PMDD for fertilizing will it still be 1ml per 10 Gallons or would it be closer to half this dose because of the low light and liquid carbon?

I would dose the full amount each day, 2WPG wouldnt be low light really IMHO, more fert than you need won't do any harm at all, either way its better to have more than less.

Try cutting it back if it grows too tall, this is a known method to make certain plants grow more compact, glosso is one of them, although using more light usually guarentees this.

I suppose you made ADA this year DarrenB) sent my entry off today, deadline today, looks like the UK may only have a couple of entries, things are going backwards over there:S although UKAPS has over 2500 members now and a very active forum, amazingly only a small handful of entries.

No ADA entry for me this year. I decided to give up and coming plant folk like yourself a chance this year.
I am surprised there are only a few UK entries this year. With the hobby booming over there at the moment.

I didn't get to plant the glosso last night. I will try get time this evening.
Thanks again for the advice and good luck with your ADA entry.
