Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

ADA was created by bart (Bart Korfanty)
hi everyone
My main tank needs new substrate, it's a year since i planted it so it's pretty much drained from everything by now (can see it by stagnation in growth). I was using tropica's with some add of laterite so far (for many setups) but want to try something new and ADA products looks tempting. I read all the specs on them and now i'm looking for any piece of real experience information on amazonia and amazonia II, also liquid fertilizers and suplements. Are they available from any of Dublin's shops? or internet is only sollution.
thanks
bart

Dont have any fertz at all....!

Have all my plants are planted in gravel and im running co2 into the tank using a 2kg fire extinguisher and my plants have taken off growing like mad im cutting back my plants every few weeks and givin the cuttings away.

Cost me about 30 euro for all the bits need to use the fire extinguisher but ill be using one from now on for sure. Cause no hassle no problems nothing im using mine in a 180l tahnk and the 2kg will last about a year.

Saves so much hassle when you have to remove the old fertz from the tank, co2 is the way is stress free way.

al, you will need ferts,
your growth will slow even with the co2
and your into algae teritory,

bart, the ada thing is well documented
curefan's tank on the front page is ada'd to bits
and looks well i think you will agree

i personally used flourite sand and gravel
and all is well, if you dose ferts you essentially dont need
a fancy substrate as the plants will take what they need from the water,
im not saying it will do any harm and may well give a head start,
but strictly, its not essential

also ada is not for the poor fishkeeper!

i re-read my post and Im not against aquasoil,
the aquasoil is great stuff by all accounts
and it does look really nice,

It was just in my situation,
i didnt have the funds to go that way,

anyway,
there are more priorities in a planty tank than substrate IMO

i would personally put more priority on
a really good big filter and decent co2 , lights, fertz, etc etc
but if you are sorted for all that, go for it!!

regards
