cladophora help!
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hi all
ok my clado is killing me
it has matted into my cuba and i cant pull it off
without uprooting big lumps of the cuba
i dose EI, presurissed co2, bit of easy carbo in the mix
10x turnover etc etc
if i beat the clado will it die off
of will i physcially have to remove it
thus screwing up my cuba big time!
regards

I think you will have to physically remove it. But i cant see how it got caught up with your HC Cuba. Unless the HC grew in to it.
Try cutting the HC from around it. The HC should fill back in quickly.

hi platy
i think it has come up through the cuba
i had asked about it on ukaps but got no response
basically, i have stag and clado that seems to be coming up from the substrate
and through my cuba carpet. When a large bit of cuba became uprooted i noticed tonnes
of mulm underneath the cuba, i have stopped aggresively hoovering the cuba since i got cherry shrimp
so that could be the problem
i now have shrimplets galore so i am more nervous about
cuba hoovering now
I am pretty sure its caldo, its green and tough as boots (not slimy)
it would remind you of steel wool,
if i pull at a bit it rips up cuba galore with it
also if i grab a tuft of it it stretches out into
big long threads if that makes sense
its killing my cuba carpet that i have spent 9 months growing!

I was thinking of the moss balls when you said cladophora. That's why i taught the HC was growing in to it.
Looks like you have a tricky one on your hands. I have had a similar problem with a black algae (no ID) growing beneath the HC. I lost a few set up from this with no way out.
The only thing i could suggest is add a small power head aimed down at the HC, add liquid carbon dayly and syphon over the HC. If you suck up some shrimp just add them back to the tank.
Sorry i cant be more help.

Hi mate physical removal is probably best, its a tricky one to get rid of, probably one of the hardest, unfortunatly as you have discovered it likes HC a lot:unsure: had that problem myself last year sometime. You could try a three day blackout, this will definitely knock the algae back somewhat and continue with the manual removal. Cant really suggest much more Im not sure there is much more you can do tbh, its definitely a stubborn one for sure and a positive cure has not been found yet to combat it.

thanks zig
i am removing it at the moment
ive upped to co2 and dosing easycarbo
couple of things..
is it worth trying reducing lighting?
(48w compact t5 no + 40w t8, 8hrs)
will i fill it in with more stem plants
for the moment? any point?

No point in adding more plants tbh if the tank has algae
How big is the tank?
You probably could reduce the lighting for the moment, I would knock off the T8s for now, it should help but it really depends on the size of the tank, you might be able to knock off the T5s and only use the T8s that might be better solution until you get on top of it. Keep dosing the CO2 or the HC may start to die off slowly.

hiya zig
just realised i didnt answer your question
the tank is 36 x 12 x 15" approx 100l
it has two sperate lumninaires so i think i will try
the burst thing (one is 48w compact t5 (not HO) the other is 40w t8)
ive been sucked into the "light light light" thing
and have never tried stepping it back
