Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

CO2 question

Hi all,

I have been using JBL Vario Co2 Easy 2 set for last few years, but since I got my new big tank the running cost for Co2 is becoming too high. Each disposable bottle of 500gr cost me 15euro +delivery and lasts less than 2 months.
I know a lot of you are using CO2 fire extinquishers.
I would like to get one myself, but would like to ask few questions beforehand:

1) What is the average refilling price for 2kg Co2 cylinder?
2) who does the refilling, I have read on the forum previously some of you could not get through to CO2 refill cervices.
3) One of the most important questions - how to adjust the commercial cylinder( valve and etc) to suit the fishtank needs?
at the moment I have magnetic needle valve which controls the CO2 flow and also can be used on a timer, so I do not use CO2 during the night.Maybe its possible somehow to adjust the existing JBL one?

Hope somebody will be able to help me.

Thanks in advance

Don,t use CO2 myself but if you use the search function for CO2 fire extinguishers there is a thread on how to convert and setup a fire extinguisher. it has a great pictures giving step by step instructions.

Hope it helps

hi there

i am still on the disposable bottles myself
but have done a bit of homework

one thing you definately need is a thread converter
to get the reg on to the f/e
(i got one in Fishantics in dun laoire)

i get the disp. bottles locally for 20e
so if your postage is more than 5e
I suggest supporting the local lfs! (seahorse aquariums)

I dont know the JBL system
but is it not a magnetic solenoid (shuts off co2)
rather that a needle valve (adjusts the co2 release)?

Loads of people have done conversions
so you should be able to get more advice

Thanks for all replies,

I will have to do some more investigation anyway.
As for now, ddwholesales agreed to sell me the CO2 extinquisher for 35-40 EURO, and refills would cost 15euro.

Will keep updating...
