Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

picked up some nice big roots today
they are used from reptile tanks that were getting
a makeover so I got a good price,
i have no issue with them being from a reptile tank, should I?
i will be soaking them for about two weeks
ideally i would prefer them a little less knotty
but they are well usable for what i have in mind
crap photos to follow, thats a regualar bottle of plonk for scale
theres some left, pm me if you want more info, dont wnat to be plugging on the forum

Aquarium solutions sell it. Its much cheaper than the likes of red moorwood altough red moorwood is a bit nicer IMO.
Nice find though, have some myself - my stuff seems really bad for tanins

thanks for the feedback
i thought it was redmoor just a knottier version!
re: the reptiles, im sure the roots are full of wee etc
but they will get a good boiling
2poc, regarding tannins, is this long term tannins
how long have you had them in your tank
did you soak them, etc
if there is any traces will the nitrogen cycle
look after it i wonder?
the shop had put some in a malawi tank
and its been there for two weeks
without any visible problems
and im sure they didnt boil or soak them
i will tread carefully all the same
would it work to soak some and test the soaking water
would it give me an idea if its leaching ammonias for example

I didn't soak them, I put them in about 2 months ago. Took them about 3 weeks to sink too.
I'd say boiling them will take care of any of the problems you mention above
P.s. Aquaristik.net is a great place for roots, lovely big pieces of red moorwood but not cheap...

the greenmachine do them too,
i find it hard to judge what you are looking
at when buying something like that off a photo!
p.s would tannins stain a plastic bath
i told the missus they would be sitting in the bath
for a fortnight but shes marked my card if the
bath stains

I know what you mean, I did buy some of the ones off Aquaristik though & wasn't disappointed. Haven't seen moorwood for sale in Dublin at all..
If I were you I wouldn't chance putting the roots in the bath.
I'd imagine the surface is fairly porous & the tannins would get into any scratches.
Sure just buy a cheap plastic container/bin & that'll do the job & save yourself an ear bashing.. You gotta keep your missus on the right side, especially if she doesn't like fish (as per my wife).
A bit off the point but I once bought a new tank & put it in a bedroom upstairs, it was on top of a chest of drawers beside a bed in the guest room (open top tank).
My missus was concerned that the fish might jump out & of course I laughed.
Next day she found a load of dead guppies on the bed & freaked out

The tank had to go

(being sold for reptiles) but havn't seen them since

4 dont soak them in the bath. It will stain it and some baths wont take the detergents needed to remove the stains.
As mentioned a cheap storage tub put in the garden and soak them.
Empty and refill with water once a week.
Don't worry about any pollutants from the reptiles. It shouldn't be a problem.
Boiling can help clean the wood but IMO only time in water will release the tannic acid.

Picked up a nice big piece of the vinewood myself in Aquatic Solutions. The stuff is like cork at first but will eventually soak through. Have it weighed down now nearly three weeks and its still a little boyant so expect a long haul
